We are seeking a Head of Canadian Property Underwriting Professional to join our Sompo Canadian team in our Toronto, Ontario office. This position will support our Canadian Domestic platform.
Job Summary:
As the Head of Property, you will play a critical role in building out our Canadian Property Business including the staff which will work with you on evaluating and analyzing property insurance risks for a wide range of clients in Canada. You will lead the Canadian property underwriting process of assessing risk factors, determining coverage and pricing, and collaborating with other stakeholders to develop and implement underwriting strategies that align with the company's goals and guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in training, professional development, and knowledge-sharing activities to stay updated with industry best practices and enhance underwriting skills.
- Stay updated with industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions to identify potential risks and opportunities.
- Evaluate and underwrite property insurance risks, including conducting risk assessments, analyzing data, reviewing applications, and determining coverage and pricing.
- Assist in developing underwriting strategies, guidelines, and policies that align with the company's goals and objectives.
- Provide excellent customer service by promptly responding to inquiries, addressing concerns, and resolving issues in a professional and timely manner.
- Contribute to the achievement of business targets, including premium growth, profitability, and customer satisfaction.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as claims, risk engineering, and legal, to assess and manage risks, resolve issues, and optimize business outcomes.
- Manage and guide underwriters, including reviewing their work, providing feedback, and mentoring to ensure quality underwriting decisions.
- Develop and maintain relationships with clients, brokers, and other stakeholders to drive new business opportunities and build a strong book of business.
- Collaborate with brokers and clients to gather information, clarify requirements, and negotiate terms and conditions.
- Participate in market analysis, including competitor analysis, rate monitoring, and identifying potential market niches.
Qualifications include:
- French language is an asset
- Strong knowledge of property insurance products, coverages, underwriting guidelines, and risk assessment techniques.
- Proficient in analyzing data, interpreting financial statements, and utilizing underwriting tools and software.
- Strong negotiation skills with the ability to balance profitability and risk management.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
- Professional designations, such as Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP), or other relevant certifications, would be an asset.
- Ability to travel as required
- Bachelor’s Degree or relevant work experience.
- 15+ years of experience in property underwriting, preferably in the Canadian market.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and provide guidance to more junior underwriters.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders.
- Professional designations, such as Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP), CRM, would be an asset
- Knowledge of Canadian insurance regulations and market trends.
