We’re looking for our next Director, Platform Engineering, Cloud. Could It Be You?

The Director, Platform Engineering (Cloud) provides cross-functional management focused on the delivery of world class engineering solutions in financial services. This is a seasoned leader who enables the establishment of high performing technical teams in the organization.

As one of the key executors of QFG’s technology strategy, this role oversees the engineering teams responsible for delivering cloud technology platforms, with strong focus on improving the engineering experience at Questrade. These platforms enable product engineering teams to deliver work with autonomy, quality and productivity, with capabilities including but not limited to container runtime, streaming, messaging, integration, developer tooling, and more. This leader will implement innovative approaches to ensure their teams are unblocked and performing well towards their goals, in collaboration with other engineering teams to fulfill Questrade’s mission: help Canadians become more financially successful and secure.

What’s it like working as a Director, Platform Engineering, Cloud at Questrade?

The scope of the Platform Engineering (Cloud) team includes delivering technology that supports the development of products across every line of business. In face of significant organizational growth, this group helps other engineering functions scale accordingly, by delivering technology platforms that reduce the cognitive load in an environment where complexity doesn’t scale linearly. This team must work in coordination with other engineering teams to ensure solutions are well integrated into the existing ecosystem, while striking a balance and looking ahead to align those solutions with the technology strategy defined by Enterprise Architecture.

The ideal leader for this position will be an individual that is opinionated at the right times, and also humble and open to new ideas when improvement is needed. We often review organizational scopes to optimize for velocity and cognitive load. Currently, the scope of this group includes abstracting the complexity of the following capabilities, to facilitate engineering consumption:

• Cloud Pipelines
• Cloud Data Platform
• Integration & Streaming Platforms (such as Kafka and Google Pub/Sub)
• Cloud Traffic
• Developer tooling related to this scope
• Cloud Runtimes
• Release Management

In this role, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Evolve and foster the platform engineering culture at Questrade, treating engineering teams as customers.
• Ensure engineering compliance with secure application development best practices, security-by-design, privacy-by-design and rapid resolution of any known software vulnerabilities.
• Maintain a view and provide visibility into the engineering roadmaps and milestones to executive stakeholders, handling questions, concerns and making adjustments as needed.
• Provide support and expertise on the platforms owned, considering a complex and hybrid (cloud and on-premises) infrastructure environment; Although this role does not have a direct infrastructure focus, it is accountable for evaluating (and recommending) approaches to enable proper operability of applications on both infrastructure and software levels. This requires that this leader understands the platform's codebase and boundaries of responsibilities, as well as those of the applications of the engineering teams that consume the platforms.
• The incumbent will align with the Senior Technology Leadership team on strategic imperatives and will help define the resources, org structures and cultural changes necessary to support the technology strategy.
• Ensure engineering compliance with all IT governance practices and regulatory requirements.
• Be a forward-thinking technologist who is continuously researching new approaches to problems and discussing them with others in a productive manner, in a community of practice setting.
• Partners with the Managing Director, Technology Strategy and the Technology Leadership team on the vision and direction for technology across the enterprise.
• Break down yearly strategic objectives in smaller goals to facilitate the planning of quarterly program increments, making sure all involved teams understand the tactical implications of such strategies in their planning.
• Provide leadership support to teams that are designing, implementing and testing platform features, with a strong focus on the stability and usefulness of the platform to its engineering consumers.
• Lead the support efforts of the platforms built across all environments, addressing issues in a timely fashion, respecting agreed upon service level objectives.

• Advanced expertise with modern practices such as Agile, SAFe, DevOps, SRE and their impact on large-scale complex technology organizations.
• Very strong appreciation for the complexities of service delivery for highly regulated businesses.
• Exposure to the full software development life cycle, including design, configuration, integration, testing and support including, but not limited to, gathering requirements, designing the future state solution, the development work breakdown, as well as supporting quality assurance and post-production efforts.
• Ability to improve operational efficiency, service delivery and information management across the IT organization.
• Expertise in budget planning, financial management.
• Expert knowledge of how to deliver results in alignment with control frameworks.
• Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies, technology directions, and strategic application to business needs, including the ability to differentiate between a relevant trend and hype.
