We acknowledge that UBC Sauder at the Vancouver Campus is situated within the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam. We acknowledge that UBC Sauder at the UBC Robson Square is situated on the traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh.


The Undergraduate Office at the UBC Sauder School of Business administers the Bachelor of Commerce program, which enrolls over 4,000 students in twelve option specializations. There are approximately 20,000 inquiries from prospective students and 9,000 applicants for admission to the faculty annually. The Undergraduate Office is responsible for marketing and recruitment, administration of broad-based admission for the selection of qualified candidates, course scheduling, registration and evaluation of business courses, academic advising, administration of awards and scholarships, academic promotion and graduation, co-ordination of exam scheduling, orientation and transition programs, and student engagement and development programming. The Undergraduate Office is also responsible for the overall policies and procedures for student participation in commerce study abroad and exchange programs at 45 universities in 26 countries; policies, procedures and administration of the dual degree programs with partner universities; and the development, management and administration of UBC Sauder’s International Summer Business Program.


The Associate Director of Student Engagement and Development for the Undergraduate Program Office is responsible for developing and implementing strategic plans and initiatives for student services, programs and experiences in line with the school’s goals. This includes the leadership and strategic direction for a broad framework of student engagement programs that enhances student learning and development and that also fosters strong student communities through meaningful orientation and transition experiences, personal development programs and experiences, and the stewardship of an environment that guides, supports and facilitates student-led projects and initiatives. The incumbent develops a comprehensive strategic plan with community partners on the training and professional development of key student stakeholder groups including the UBC Commerce Undergraduate Society (CUS) and other UBC Sauder student clubs.


Work Performed

- Leads the development, implementation and evaluation of the strategic plan and annual goals for student engagement and development services and programs in line with the school’s strategic goals.

- Identifies demands and needs for student development services and programs for the school and leads the strategic development, implementation, measurement and assessment of programs and services for undergraduate students. Obtains and analyzes survey data to inform needs.

- Provides strategic leadership and operational oversight in the development, implementation and evaluation of student engagement and development programs and services.

- Provides strategic oversight for orientation and transition for Bachelor of Commerce students including university-wide and UBC Sauder-specific programs (e.g., Imagine UBC, Jump Start and The Spark). Identifies overall goals, conceptualizes and designs programming and metrics for assessment, engages campus partners and provides operational oversight to the implementation of these programs.

- Provides day-to-day managerial direction and guidance to the Student Engagement and Development team in the Undergraduate Office; sets objectives, monitors and manages workloads, recruits, hires, trains, evaluates performance and terminates as required.

- Collaborates with the Business Career Centre in the development and implementation of strategies to integrate employer and community relations within a framework that prepares students for success during their studies and in the workplace.

- Leads the school in the development of strong student communities: engaging students as a foundation for their future engagement as alumni; researching and analyzing community issues and needs; evaluating and monitoring existing programs; developing new student community-based programs and resources; and acting as a trainer and facilitator for employees, volunteers, programs and services.

- Acts as a champion for student learning and engagement at the school and across the university; participates in advisory committees and makes recommendations on new initiatives and program/service enhancements and improvements and formulates plans/proposals for review by the Assistant Dean.

- Cultivates, builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders across UBC, community professionals and community groups, student groups and clubs and other student services to support student success, retention, learning and enriching student life at the school and at UBC as a whole.

- In consultation with the Commerce Undergraduate Society (CUS) and other UBC Sauder student organizations, identifies synergies for effective delivery of programs and leadership/personal development opportunities for undergraduate students at the UBC Sauder.

- Conceptualizes and oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of student development and engagement policies and procedures.

- Participates in UBC and School committees related to student development and engagement. Works with UBC Sauder Development and Alumni Engagement to help facilitate alumni engagement.

- Provides consultation and support to employees, faculty, student employees and students on student learning and co-curricular learning experiences.

- Identifies current gaps in the provision of resources and program support and develops solutions.

- Develops and manages the UBC Sauder BCom Orientation and Student Development budgets

- Develops processes and policy around funding opportunities, such as Student Experience Grants.

- Assumes responsibility for special projects assigned by the Assistant Dean of the Undergraduate Program.

- Remains current in the literature and research in the fields of student development and student success.

- Performs other duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four to five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience


- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion


Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven ability to facilitate dialogue between diverse constituents and to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and evaluate literature, research, institutional data and theoretical frameworks to establish, manage and transform evidence-based programs and services.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and on cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to make decisions independently.
  • Excellent oral and written communications, judgement, interpersonal skills, cross-cultural sensitivity and organizational skills are required.
  • Knowledge of the school’s undergraduate program and university systems, structures, processes and decision-making structures is an asset.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Ability to manage the complexity inherent within a multi-faceted work environment focused on broad outcomes for students.
  • Previous experience and expertise in developing, managing and measuring effective student programming.
  • Flexibility to work some evening and weekend hours as needed to effectively implement organizational programs
  • Experience with new student orientation and first year experience or equivalent major student learning programs and/or community development is required.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure of critical deadlines and to manage a demanding workload.
  • Prior experience in higher education related to administrative and student services with demonstrated abilities in supervising and managing a team at a post-secondary institution is required.
  • Outstanding developmental student advising skills.


Compensation Range

$6,378.58 - $9,189.17 CAD Monthly

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.
