The Student Engagement and Development Advisor is responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating programs and services to support undergraduate student learning and personal and professional development. In collaboration with students and university partners, the Student Engagement and Development Advisor supports 3,800 new and continuing Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) students to become successful university learners, who are well prepared to engage in the university community and achieve their personal and career goals. The Student Engagement and Development Advisor develops learning outcomes and objectives, facilitates curricular and co-curricular learning experiences, and advises instructors and departments within the UBC Sauder who are seeking to incorporate peer-supported learning and professional development into curricula and programs. The Student Engagement and Development Advisor advises student groups and organizations and supports student leadership broadly, including student-initiated projects.
The Student Engagement and Development Advisor may be required to work outside of normal office hours from time to time, depending on programming.
Work Performed
- Provides direction, support and leadership to volunteer student leaders as they design and deliver peer programs and services for the undergraduate Commerce student community.
- Develops and manages budgets for program-specific funding.
- Participates in cross-campus communities and communities of practice such as UBC Peer Programs and faculty-based student engagement colleagues. Liaises and collaborates with student engagement colleagues and units on campus while representing the views and perspectives of the faculty in a thoughtful and clear way.
- Remains current in the literature and research in the field of Student Development.
- Leads and coordinates the delivery of existing student development programs and co-curricular experiences, activities and services for students. Programs include those developed in collaboration with the UBC Sauder departments and units, UBC Orientation, colleagues in the Student Development & Services Portfolio, the Commerce Undergraduate Society and student engagement colleagues on campus.
- Participates in cross-campus committees related to student orientation and transition.
- Implements and manages processes for collecting student data and feedback.
- Working with the Associate Director, Student Engagement and Development, provides input on the development and implementation of faculty-hosted student engagement and development programs for undergraduate students.
- Manages special projects assigned by the Associate Director, Student Engagement and Development and the Assistant Dean and Director of Undergraduate Programs.
- Supports students in crisis, either personal or academic, and advises students on available resources and makes appropriate referrals to personal support services on campus.
- Hires, trains and supervises student employees in the work-learn (part-time) program and volunteers for events; this includes coordinating work schedules and training.
- Performs other duties as required.
- Creates and implements the mechanisms for students to participate in, lead and direct activities and events that enhance the student experience and sustain a sense of community among Commerce students. Evaluates needs of students and provides recommendations.
- Supports and enhances the development of student leadership by creating and implementing the mechanism for students to participate in, lead and direct programs for their peers. Focuses on supporting student leaders through advising, training, professional development and skill building opportunities. Works closely with student leaders to coach and assists them in program development and event planning.
- Develops, implements and assesses student learning outcomes as part of program planning process; prepares event/budget reports.
- Develops, implements, and assesses orientation and transition programming and events such as Online Orientation, Jump Start, Imagine Day, Beyond Imagine and Spark for Bachelor of Commerce students that are accessible, inclusive and impactful for all students.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Must have excellent program-solving skills, including the ability to plan ahead, anticipate programs and meet deadlines efficiently.
- Knowledge of student development theories.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with a diversity of people.
- Ability to lead others and to function well within a team.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including evidence of ability to communicate well in a cross-cultural environment.
- Experience in the designing and delivering educational workshops and managing large events.
- Some evening and weekend work required.
- Must be able to accommodate flexible hours to attend events, deliver workshops, or provide training in evenings and on weekends.
- Masters degree is preferred.
- Experience working in a post-secondary environment in project management or program development is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of different stakeholders.
Compensation Range
$5,906.25 - $8,508.42 CAD Monthly
The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.
