Member Engagement & Communications Officer
The TFA is the union representing 1001 faculty, librarians/archivists and Professional Counsellors at Toronto Metropolitan University.
We are seeking to fill a full-time position of Member Engagement & Communications Officer in an active union office located at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) downtown Toronto campus. The appointment has an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023 or later.
Position Information
Full-time Continuing (with probationary period)
Salary Range: $75,000-$90,000 plus benefits (to be negotiated based on education and experience).

Position Summary
Reporting to the President and in consultation with the Executive, the Member Engagement & Communications Officer is responsible for the development and implementation of the TFA’s communications plan, including internal and external communications that are in alignment with the TFA’s mission, vision, values and strategic directions. The primary role of this position is member engagement through effective communication and union organizing. This role supports and works collaboratively with key stakeholders both within and outside of the Association to develop and implement targeted communication strategies and plays a key role in enhancing the reputation of the TFA through marketing, member engagement and communication initiatives.
Duties
In collaboration with the TFA Executive:
- Work with other TFA staff & Executive members to manage the preparation and distribution of documents including but not limited to newsletters, pamphlets, bulletins and handbooks.
- Work with all of TFA's Committees and bargaining team to ensure the dissemination of their work to members and community stakeholders.
- Carry out other duties, related to communications and member mobilization, that may be assigned from time to time as the needs and/or circumstances of TFA change (such duties shall be discussed prior to assignment to ensure compatibility with workload and expertise).
- Develop and maintain TFA's social media presence, website and overall online profile.
- Engage members by developing and coordinating events, campaigns and other activities designed to increase member involvement using a combination of traditional approaches and digital strategies
- Develop targeted communications strategies to convey key messages, association positioning and objectives to address specific communication needs and issues aimed at members; includes writing, editing, photography and production of these materials
- Design and create content for Association communications and campaigns designed to increase member involvement, including but not limited to media releases, newsletter articles, op-eds, internal communications and community outreach materials.
- Maintain and update a standard welcome package/presentation for new members
- Supervise the organization and execution of membership general meetings as required.
- Assist in the development of timely and appropriate responses to new or emerging issues that impact members and/or the Association
- Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to work in a collaborative environment
- Post-secondary degree
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, time-management, and prioritizing skills in a multi-task environment
- Familiarity with the higher education sector
- Excellent written and technical communication skills, including proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, and preparing print and electronic publications
- Excellent oral and written communications skills including writing, editing and proofreading.
- Proven success in the use of social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter) and website design and management, and ideally experience in running one or more social media platforms for an organization or union
- Ability to think quickly, analyze complex communication issues and develop a timely and appropriate response.
- Self-starter, independent and takes initiative
- Commitment to fostering positive working relationships within the Association and the broader University community
- A demonstrated commitment to union principles
- A minimum of three years' full-time work experience (or its equivalent) in communications, community organizing (in unionized environments), union mobilization, media relations, public affairs, and/or journalism
