The library continues to transform, along with VIU, in response to the communities we serve. We are proud of our reputation and committed to continual improvement. We are currently formulating our latest Strategic Plan to ensure our library services and resources effectively align with evolving community needs.

About You

Learning environments excite you. Enhancing learners' success motivates you. You're immersed in the constantly changing environment of post-secondary education. You bring a questioning mind and a learner's perspective to the Library's mission and operations. You thrive in a collaborative, dynamic setting, where librarians share and shape ideas and insights together in synergy with the broader team. You're a leader who is happy to see your ideas transformed by your colleagues' perspectives, into team-defined visions and plans that are greater than the sum of their parts.

The Library is a well-aligned partner in delivering high-quality teaching and expanding access to a diverse range of learners. Your work is important, connecting with students directly and supporting their academic experiences at VIU. You will uplift and empower diverse communities and foster lifelong learning in a complex information landscape. Relationship development, curiosity, empathy and an externally-focused mindset will be crucial to your work.

About the Position

The position will work with their colleagues, campus departments and community partners to plan and implement innovative outreach efforts, targeted programming, and inclusive initiatives, engaging the university community while adapting and promoting student-centered library services that contribute to student success and retention.

Duties

With direction and support, the successful candidate will carry out the following tasks:

  • Collaborate closely with a team of librarians to ensure a cohesive and well-integrated outreach approach that leverages the collective expertise of the team;
  • Connect and liaise with community partners to share expertise, promote the library or participate in projects.
  • Act as liaison librarian for assigned subject areas;
  • Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
  • Organize events and programs which advocate library resources and services, providing outreach to incoming students and potential students as well as those students transitioning out of VIU;
  • Advance the Library's goals of information and digital literacies as core competencies;
  • Contribute to the Library’s commitment to decolonizing our practices through ongoing engagement initiatives related to local descriptive practice;
  • Work with the Library Public Services team to design and deliver a cohesive program of research help services, information literacy instruction, and collection-based solutions, integrating assessment measures of programs and student success;
  • Liaise with campus departments to promote awareness of the library’s pivotal role as a crucial partner in facilitating student engagement, success and learning;
  • Actively engage in initiatives that support the decolonization, accessibility and inclusion of the campus community through Library programs and services;
  • Develop, deliver and assess, in collaboration with colleagues, campus departments and community partners, effective library communications and outreach initiatives that increase undergraduate and graduate student awareness of library resources, facilities, services and events, enhancing the student experience and supporting learner success;

Required Qualifications:

  • Work experience in an academic or public library setting with a proven client and service- focused approach
  • Experience or coursework in integrating learning outcomes and best practices in pedagogy in the planning and delivery of online, in-person or blended instruction or programming for diverse groups of learners
