This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

Hours of work are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The weekly schedule of experiments and tasks is discussed at a 2-hour lab meeting that is typically once a week.

Department Summary
Center of Excellence for Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Immunity Research (CEGIIR) at the University of Alberta has a focus on research related to characterization of a retroviral infection in patients with autoimmune liver disease using patient samples and animal models.
Position Summary
The Research Coordinator provides laboratory related assistance to the research group (technicians, post docs, graduate students) under the guidance of the Principal Investigator. The research lab has a translational program that focuses on studying immune responses to betaretroviral infection in patients with cancers and autoimmune diseases as well as mouse models of disease.
The position supports the development of viral expression vectors for transfection, infection and protein expression experiments to study viral pathogenesis and create ELISA for detection of betaretrovirus antibodies. The position also requires knowledge or experience with flow cytometry and cutting-edge Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) applications for research.
Duties
Administrative duties (25%)
  • Maintaining ethics related paperwork and documentation
  • Data entry
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Coordinate orientation and ongoing development of junior research team members (summer students, undergraduate students, graduate students and trainee positions). Ensure trainees are compliant with ethics and protocol procedures within research program as needed.
  • Report to the Principal Investigator providing administrative support for research and clinical studies
  • Assist with research budget preparation for new grant applications
  • Maintain program database and research study databases
  • Assists PI with grant preparation, ethics and operating approval applications and renewals
Financial Duties (5%)
  • Monitor budget for Alberta Health Compliance.
  • Coordinates and prepares 3 monthly and annual reports.
  • Research Budget: The applicant will be expected to assist the Pl with their governing and spending of research funds by monitoring expenditures. Assist in the decision making for overlap of resources across multiple projects in order to be economical, monitor and report on budgets on an ongoing basis.
Research (60%)
  • Provides training to research assistants
  • Standard flow cytometry, FACS, ELISA and ELISPOT analyses
  • Presents data at regular laboratory meetings and prepares data for publications
  • Responsible for sample preparation, primarily related to NGS library generation from nucleic acid (DNA, RNA, cDNA)
  • Performs several common molecular biology techniques including ligation mediated-PCR, RT-PCR, cDNA preparation, restriction digests, and DNA sequencing
  • Expression of betaretrovirus proteins in bacteria for ELISA preparation
  • Use of lentiviral expression vectors to deliver betaretrovirus proteins, or infectious betaretrovirus and shRNA directed to betaretrovirus genomic nucleic acid
  • Ensures accurate and timely record keeping (eg Laboratory book, Microsoft Word and Excel)
  • Provides project coordination on several projects through assisting with project design, project development and tracking, and identifying problems arising for further discussion
  • Works with other laboratory staff to ensure a safe, secure, and clean laboratory environment by adhering to EHS guidelines
  • Assists with bioinformatic data analyses and interpretation
  • Performs other activities as required
Knowledge & Qualifications
  • Proficient in using information systems and programs including bibliographic management software (e.g. EndNote), RedCap and Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Alberta Health Services HIA Awareness training
  • Course on Research Ethics (TCPS 2: CORE) training
  • Good Clinical Practice or Health Canada Division 5 training an asset
  • Knowledge of UofA Policy and Procedures and Granting Agency Guidelines, People Soft Financials, and University Policy and Procedures in a significant asset.
  • Proficient computer skills in understanding or using NGS informatic pipelines
  • Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and communication (written and verbal) skills, and high attention to detail, especially pertaining to efficient and accurate data entry and documentation.
  • 4-5 years laboratory experience
  • A basic understanding of the Illumina NGS technology and interpretation of NGS informatics
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology or Biochemistry; Master’s degree preferred.
