Job Description
SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation Services department helps partners conceptualize, prototype and deliver products to market. ARIS is on the leading edge of novel technology development. The Opportunity


SAIT is seeking an individual with a unique skill set that incorporates knowledge of computer programming, hardware-based data acquisition, electrical engineering, data analysis and data reporting. We are looking for a dynamic and organized individual to support project teams at SAIT within the Green Building Technologies (GBT) applied research group. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic, adaptable, resourceful and interested in sustainable development.


Reporting to the Green Building Technologies Operations Lead, this position will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) of Building Energy and Renewable Systems. You will be responsible for supporting the development of decision-support tools for building material selections, building-related surveys, survey data analysis, technical support and report writing, grant proposal writing, and journal/conference paper writing activities related to GBT research. The Research Associate position will also collaborate with the whole GBT team, contributing to Building Energy and Building Science Activities as needed.


The Role


  • Work closely with the PI to identify and develop research capacities for Net-zero building planning; life cycle environmental, cost, and social impact assessment; building-related decision modelling and systems planning; and integration of renewable and non-renewable energy systems for existing and new buildings.
  • Pursue other activities that maintain and advance professional growth.
  • Networking and engagement activities, including supporting tours of the GBT facility, presentations and associated preparation
  • Provide Mechanical or/and Civil Engineering expertise toward sustainable Net-zero building planning considering economic, cost, and social parameters
  • Participate in seminars and other organized scientific and technical discussions
  • Complete any necessary administrative tasks, such as time tracking
  • Provide light programming expertise to program decision tools to analyze large databases.
  • Demonstrate commitment to client’s needs and confidentiality
  • Work collaboratively with the team to maximize productivity
  • Contribute to technical report writing and scientific article writing (Journal and conference papers)
  • Provide inputs on decision modelling methods related to Multi-criteria decision-making and probabilistic analysis
  • Report progress updates verbally and in written form to management, as needed


Qualifications & Experience


  • Experience in report writing and preparation of peer-review articles is required
  • Experience in Building Envelope/systems-related projects and knowledge of Multi-criteria Decision Modelling is required
  • Registration or professional certification such as Certified Energy Manager, a LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) professional credential, or Engineer In Training (EIT) would be considered an asset
  • Diploma and/or degree from a recognized university or technical institute related to Civil or Mechanical Engineering is required
  • Experiences with AutoCAD Revit, Dynamo, and LCA software (SimaPro, OneClick etc.) would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of computer programming (preferably Python) for data analysis and decision modelling would be considered an asset
  • Current graduate student or Recent graduate (within one year)
