Job Description
Position Overview
The Ward of the 21st Century (W21C) in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the W21C Program Manager.
The Resarch Associate applies specialized knowledge to support the W21C vision for research and education in human factors, user experience, healthcare simulation, and health systems innovation

Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Provides advice on purchase of capital equipment
  • Technical
  • Performs a range of mixed methods analyses, including parametric statistical analyses, behavioural analysis, and usability testing
  • Ethics applications, development of data collection forms, enrolment of participants, development of databases, simple statistical analysis, video analysis and report generation
  • Maintains effective working relationships with academic, industry and government partners
  • Maintains warranty information
  • Keeps up with current literature and news related to education theory, design, human factors and simulation
  • Performs literature searchers, analyzes and summarizes relevant material, creates reference library of simulation articles
  • Provide human factors expertise, education and direction
  • Assist with marketing, communications and public relations
  • Manages supplies and equipment inventory
  • Identifies gaps and recommends system and software improvements for the Healthcare Human Factors Simulation Lab; oversees software and hardware upgrades
  • Manages the ethical storage of research data on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) server
  • Develops and conducts complex simulation exercises for educational and research purposes
  • Support outreach and recruitment efforts for W21C priority efforts
  • Maintains and operates a usability and patient simulation laboratory
  • Educational and Research
  • Supports the generation of academic publications and technical reports to summarize research and education activities
  • Ordering of supplies, equipment, troubleshoot and resolve problems
  • Collaborates with others in developing innovative research, designing study protocols and preparing proposals
  • Demonstrates safe use of equipment
  • Schedules activities, supports tours and demonstrations, and maintains records of simulation activities
  • Administrative
  • Provides training for educators and faculty members in the utilization of simulation equipment
  • Leads and coordinates technical training pertaining to key lab infrastructure
  • Provides on-going support for multiple audio/visual systems for observational research
  • Meets reporting requirements of funding bodies supporting W21C research projects
  • Provides expertise in the development of human factors and simulation-based education research
  • Provides basic computer programming and database management skills to support research projects
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Previous application of human factors, user experience, healthcare simulation, and human centred evaluation techniques and design principles within the healthcare industry
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of patient records
  • Resourceful, innovative, creative, strategic
  • 3 to 4 years of research work experience required
  • Communicates effectively on behalf of the Human Factors Program with colleagues from various disciplines and external collaborators within a complex initiative
  • Ability to independently make decisions and problem solve
  • Well organized, detail oriented and good judgement to proactively respond to changing priorities and contexts
  • Basic understanding of healthcare systems
  • Graduate degree in relevant discipline such as psychology or biomedical engineering required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including academic publications and technical reports
  • Works effectively independently and promote good teamwork
  • Ability to receive direction, collaborate with others in setting goals, and work effectively in teams to achieve agreed upon goals within set timeframes
  • Relevant work and experience will be considered alongside post-secondary educational experience
  • Experience coordinating and conducting quantitative and qualitative research
  • Theoretical and applied knowledge of human factors, user experience, healthcare simulation, usability engineering, human centred design, and/or human computer interaction in health care
  • Leadership, organization, problem solving and interpersonal skills required
  • Ability to work in an environment of continuous change and growth
  • Excellent people skills, including the ability to demonstrate tact and courtesy dealing with patients, staff and physicians
  • Ability to develop and coordinate mixed methods research studies in consultation with academic and industry collaborators
