Job Description
Position Overview
The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate, Qualitative. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately x months/year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Research Manager.
This position will include leading community engagement activities, participating in the development of research proposals, data collection (including using innovative approaches), completion of data analysis, application of theoretical frameworks to research process, and development of knowledge mobilization tools (including academic publication and presentations). They will assist in the development and implementation of policies, standards and procedures for the scientific and technical work performed by the research group. They will also assign, coordinate and review the technical work of the project teams.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Plays a key role in all activities undertaken by the research team
  • Applies specialized skills and knowledge in the maintenance and development of core systems and processes
  • Works with the Principle Investigator and supports the research team through conducting complex data collection and data analysis.
  • Produce initial drafts of manuscripts for publication and appropriate scientific journals
  • Integrates complex theoretical frameworks, including intersectionality and critical race theory, into data analysis
  • Records findings to contribute to publication within the field of the research at both a national and international level
  • Engages with Black and racialized communities and attends community events including on evenings and weekends
  • Works closely with the Principal Investigator in areas of protocol development, standard operating protocol development, development of research projects and proposals
  • Conducts complex data collection and analysis
  • Has expert knowledge of the hands-on work performed as part of the operations and development activities of the group
  • Designing project plans
  • Conducts literature search, literature review and data extraction
  • Provide guidance to research assistants, managing research projects as well as ensuring that as qualitative or qualitative methods evolve, the laboratory adapts to and learns the new processes
  • Budget involvement including developing reports, tracking expenses, and reconciliation of accounts
  • Complete and submit ethics approval
  • Includes contributing to research and funding strategies, identifying and helping to secure funding opportunities and shaping the vision, direction and structure of the group
  • Able to use various softwares for data analysis --- such as NVivo etc
  • Mentor and train others to achieve the goals of the research project(s)
  • May support other research projects by providing knowledge, skills, and on-the-job training to others
  • Prepares and submits documentation and other deliverables, technical and financial, required by funding agencies and collaborators
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Able to recognize and resolve routine problems in the research process
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex qualitative analysis
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex research project
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Outstanding writing and communication skills
  • Indepth theoretical knowledge of intersectionality theory and critical race theory
  • Track record of building positive relationship with Black and racialized communities
  • Experience with qualitative research activities: developing interview guides; conducting interviews, focus groups, observations; transcription, coding and data analysis.
  • Intermediate software and database experience required with proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with NVivo is an asset.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of post-doctoral experience in a relevant research area
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with specific research activities: participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, developing and maintaining ethics applications, writing manuscripts and reports, assisting with grants and funding applications.
  • Track record of publication related to immigrant, racialized and Black people’s health
  • Ability to mentor and provide technical support for other team members
  • Experience working on research projects with Black and/or racialized communities
  • Masters or PhD degree in a relevant discipline required with training in qualitative research methods
