Job Description
Position Overview
The Hotchkiss Brain Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant (Stem Cell). This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator.
There will be times when the individual may be required to work outside the normal working hours to maintain stem cells and other cell cultures.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Some training of junior team members may also be expected
  • Accurate and detailed record keeping
  • Conduct biomedical laboratory tests, experiments and analyses
  • Support the research team by performing skilled technical procedures. This may include conducting stem cell culture and differentiating cells to multiple tissue types, animal husbandry and animal dissection, laboratory tests, experiments and analysis to assist in the goals of the research group
  • Reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment
  • Under general supervision & direction of the PI or Research Manager, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
  • Conduct literature reviews, surveys, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications as required
  • Record findings to collaborate on publications within the field of the research at both a national and international level
  • Use of various biological samples (eg. tissues, blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, cell extracts)
  • Trains other staff and students in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Bachelors Degree in neurobiology, stem cell biology, or molecular biology
  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
  • Work with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
  • Provide semi-skilled to skilled technical procedures to support the research project
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
  • Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
  • 1 to 3 years of related technical experience within the fields of neurobiology, stem cell biology, or molecular biology
  • WHMIS
