Job Description
Position Overview
The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Health Equity Research Administrator reports to the Program Lead. The RA will interact significantly with both research participants, community agencies and the Lead Investigator(s) of the project(s) to which he/she is assigned. The Research Associate will be responsible for supporting specific research projects and general Health Equity activities.
The Associate will provide support, manage projects, and conduct research activities for research, policy and innovation projects within the Health Equity program. It is anticipated that the Associate will be involved in 2-4 projects at any given time. The Associate may supervise junior project staff and trainees on the research projects. At least 50% of the project time will be dedicated at inception of the position to the CIHR funded Indigenous Harm Reduction Housing which is in its third and final year and includes multiple stakeholders including agencies and Elders. Allocation of the remaining project time will be determined on an ongoing basis with the Health Equity Lead.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Under limited supervision and consultation, performing a range of research and coordination tasks in support of Health Equity Program objectives. Tasks would include helping to develop project plans (determining and then executing appropriate quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods approaches); data gathering; ethics applications; liaison with partners; and knowledge translation (creating reports, policy briefs and presentations, drafting publications, etc).
  • Ensuring compliance with all university and OCAP regulations for research involving human subjects
  • Determining priorities with the Health Equity Program Lead
  • Supervising junior project staff and trainees on the research projects
  • Participating in complex team and related issues
  • Analyzing qualitative interviews and observational data over time; interpreting qualitative and quantitative data; writing research papers suitable for publication; preparing policy briefs, posters and presentations
  • Working closely with Lead Investigators in the execution of research protocols and programs
  • Ensuring all stakeholders are kept informed of relevant project progression
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Experience writing up results in interdisciplinary journal article form
  • A resourceful, innovative, creative, strategic, decision maker and problem solver
  • A high level of sophisticated research experience & skills including familiarity with mixed methods and the integration and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data
  • Well-developed knowledge and expertise related to Calgary’s homeless serving system of care and how the homeless and other vulnerable populations interact and engage with health care providers is an asset
  • Ability to work independently and promote good teamwork
  • 3-4 years progressive experience in conducting community-based and Indigenous health research
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and courtesy dealing with persons with lived experience, community partners, policy makers, staff, and health care professionals
  • Expertise in coordinating and conducting quantitative and qualitative research
  • Experience in the Health Equity program is an asset
  • Experience conducting research with persons experiencing vulnerabilities with training in trauma informed care research practices
  • Ability to receive direction, collaborate with others in setting goals, and work effectively in teams to achieve agreed-upon goals
  • Excellent people skills
  • Leadership, communication, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Must exercise initiative, good judgment and concern for detail and accuracy
  • Enrollment of participants, development of databases, statistical analysis, and report generation
  • Bachelors level training required, Masters preferred, with a preference for training within a policy, Indigenous health or social work related field
  • Experience conceptualizing, developing and writing policy briefs
  • Ability to plan, problem-solve, and organize multiple tasks and priorities
