Job Description
Position Overview
The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator.
The Research Assistant will work collaboratively with the Scientific Director and Assistant Scientific Director on a number of ongoing heath system research projects where the Scientific Office of the Diabetes, Obesity and Nutrition Strategic Clinical Network (DON SCN) is either leading or collaborating.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Conducts environmental scans and the searches of research literature (academic papers, government reports, white papers) and clinical trial databases
  • Provides regular updates and communications on work progress and findings
  • With input from the Assistant Scientific Director, establish an effective and realistic work plan, including timelines and scope of work
  • Determines a literature search strategy including determining the most appropriate research question(s), keywords, and databases
  • Identifies and contacts, in collaboration with team members, other health authorities across Canada that are working on similar themes as the DON SCN
  • Works with Scientific Director and Assistant Scientific Director to identify potential publication opportunities
  • Conducts qualitative and quantitative analysis as required for projects
  • Evaluates if research literature and clinical trial databases meet the needs of the systematic review and provide recommendations to Scientific Director and Assistant Scientific Director
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelors required
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, including report writing (white paper, manuscript) and preparation of power point presentations
  • Knowledge of the Alberta health care system is desirable
  • PhD or Masters Degree preferred in Public Health, epidemiology or any other related fields
  • Conduct literature review, surveys, and other research for us in scholarly publications when required
  • Minimum two years of experience in literature searches, evidence reviews and knowledge translation
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with the Scientific Director and Assistant Scientific Director and other DON SCN team members, as well as working independently
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Access) and reference management software (EndNote, RefWorks, Reference Manager)
