Job Summary


The research assistant (RA) will support the principal investigator, co-investigators, and research personnel of the Canadian Pediatric Diabetes Consortium (CAPACITY). CAPACITY is a network made up of clinicians, researchers, patients and families, and key stakeholders from pediatric diabetes centres and partner organizations across Canada. CAPACITY will partner with patient, families and health care professionals to design a nation-wide childhood diabetes registry. The registry will support improvements in clinical care, advance research, and guide policy change, such as improving coverage of diabetes technology and support for diabetes in school.


CAPACITY has been awarded a $2M CIHR grant over 5 years to develop a nation-wide pediatric diabetes registry. Dr. Shazhan Amed is the principal investigator (PI) and UBC is the coordinating centre for this nation-wide project. The RA will manage and oversee the administrative operations, workflow, and finances of CAPACITY, as well as support the research activities of the project (i.e. quality improvement initiatives, knowledge translation, etc).


Organizational Status


Reports to Dr. Shazhan Amed, the principal investigator of the project. Works closely with the co-investigators, RAs, and coordinators at the other diabetes centres, including University of Toronto/Trillium health Partners and Montreal Children’s Hospital. The RA will also work with the Diabetes Transformation Project Coordinator at BC Children’s hospital and work with granting agencies and UBC offices (i.e., Office of Research Services, University-Industry Liaison Office, and Finance Operations).


Work Performed


  • Organizes and schedules team meetings. Produces research meeting agendas, minutes and summaries, and follows up on action items.
  • Supports knowledge translation deliverables such as the development and maintenance of a CAPACITY website, lay summaries and reports for key stakeholders (including patients/families), presentations
  • Manages the finances of the project and grant, including responsibility for budget and reconciliation of project finances, and maintenance and submission of financial reports to granting agencies.
  • Monitors and tracks project progress to ensure timely completion of the project.
  • Fosters excellent communication in a collaborative environment for all project stakeholder.
  • Works collaboratively with the Diabetes Transformation Project research coordinator who coordinates all diabetes research for the Amed lab.
  • Assists in outlining clear project goals and deliverables and communicates with different working groups to avoid duplication of work and processes.
  • The RA will be responsible and work closely with the Investigator to develop and implement the guidelines, techniques, and data collection processes for the these initiatives.
  • Supports the development and implementation of research and/or quality improvement initiatives that may arise from the CAPACITY network.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders across the country to develop SOPs for data management and collection, ethics applications, and nationwide project submissions
  • Supports data entry and data management for the BC site that will contribute to the CAPACITY registry
  • Manages the project workflow and schedules to ensure that the CAPACITY project’s research aims and approaches are achieved and outputs are produced.
  • Provides updates, reports and communications on ongoing project activities and progress to co-principal and investigators.
  • Facilitates the development of yearly progress reports and renewal documentation required by granting agencies
  • Liaises with principal/co-investigators, advisory committees, and staff from all centres who work on CAPACITY and related activities


Exceptional organization and project management skills, as well as a high degree of motivation, enthusiasm, and initiative are required for this position.


Consequence of Error/Judgement


Exercises a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in the timely and responsible management of the CAPACITY project.


Supervision Received


Oversight will be provided by the principal investigator, Dr. Shazhan Amed, however the position requires a strong independent work ethic and a candidate capable of setting their priorities within a given framework, and working within agreed-upon milestones and timelines.


Supervision Given


May be asked to supervise summer students and research assistants.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
