Job Description
Position Overview
The Department of Indigenous Engagement in the Office of the Provost and VP Academic is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Research Assistant.
The Research Assistant for Intercultural Education reports to the Operations Manager, Office of Indigenous Engagement, with day-to-day operational oversight and supervision provided by the Specialist, Indigenous Intercultural Initiatives in the Office of Indigenous Engagement. Working collaboratively and independently, the incumbent will work closely with the Specialist, Indigenous Intercultural Initiatives on special projects, including but not limited to research activity and support for the development of the Towards Being a Good Relative project and other select intercultural education program initiatives. The role will also work closely with Traditional Knowledge Keepers on various projects for the purpose of Elder engagement and cultural guidance. For projects underway, the incumbent will support the gathering of information/narrative data, data analysis, and the compilation and writing of final reports. This role may also include the completion of internal and external scans related to the development of new intercultural education programs. Additionally, the incumbent may be requested to assist with the coordination and facilitation of anti-Indigenous Racism sessions and other related intercultural workshops as well as support the team with the planning of special events, webinars, and programs hosted by the Office of Indigenous Engagement.
This position is part of the AUPE bargaining unit. Hours may fluctuate during peak periods. Some flexibility of hours worked may be required to accommodate project demands.

Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Ensure data is securely stored in a database, and that it can be retrieved for analysis in a consistent and organized fashion.
  • Assist with data collection, data analysis, and coding of narrative data for the purpose of program planning
  • Ensure data analysis and coding is done to high standards.
  • Ensure appropriate note taking/recordings during interviews and circle dialogues.
  • Assist, support, and contribute to the development of special projects under the direction and in collaboration with the Specialist, Indigenous Intercultural Initiatives.
  • Support the development and facilitation of intercultural capacity programing.
  • Attend bi-weekly meetings with the Specialist, Indigenous Intercultural Initiatives.
  • Support all major events hosted by the Office of Indigenous Engagement.
  • Collaborate regularly with the Specialist, Indigenous Intercultural Initiatives, and other identified team members to conduct, obtain, and verify results, for reporting of data.
  • Meet deadlines to ensure special projects continue to progress on schedule.
  • Identify, collect, and report data from interviews and circle dialogues
  • Conduct an institutional scan to support new intercultural program initiatives in consultation with the Specialist, Indigenous Intercultural Initiatives.
  • Coordinate the booking of rooms and facilities on campus
  • Assist in the planning and preparation of interviews and circle dialogues.
  • Assist in the recruitment participants for dialogues
  • Summarize and capture key findings from data collection.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Knowledge about regional Indigenous cultural protocols.
  • Working knowledge of research software and transcription programs such as NVivo (coding software) and Rev.com (transcribing software).
  • Experience facilitating workshops, focus groups, and dialogues/circles
  • Experience within Indigenous programs, communities, or organizations.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail and accurately perform work.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Elders and/or Traditional Knowledge Keepers
  • Familiarity and/or work experience with the Indigenous organizations
  • Strong communication, team, and collaboration skills, ability to exercise judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Research skills and experiences related to data collection, data analysis, transcribing, coding, and report writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Basic working knowledge of organizational structure of the University of Calgary
  • Proficient in skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Internet Skills, and programs for organizing information.
  • Familiarity with the principles of anti-racism education in the context of reconciliation
  • Working understanding of ii’taa’poh’to’p, UCalgary’s Indigenous Strategy content, visionary circles and related 27 recommendations.
  • Experience with Indigenous research methodologies for community-based research projects.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
  • Completed post-secondary program in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is considered.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge about Indigenous peoples, cultures, and history.
  • Demonstrated ability to listen effectively and take sufficient notes.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
