Job Description
Position Overview
The CSM Education in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Learning & Instructional Designer, Physician Assistant Program for approximately 11 months.
The Learning and Instructional Designer reports directly to Medical Director, Physician Assistant Program. There is a strong link, day-to-day collaboration and accountability to the Project Manager to support the development of the Master of Physician Assistant (PA) program in the CSM.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Facilitate linkages and collaboration between the CSM and the greater University of Calgary community engaged in online/blended teaching including IT and the Taylor Institute for Teaching & Learning
  • Build, establish and maintain an online/blended teaching and learning culture and a sense of community fostering a high level of engagement between faculty teaching in the program
  • Design, develop, and facilitate specific workshops, seminars and operational training on current online teaching skills and tools, curriculum design, course design, and module design
  • Provide instructional design support to faculty teaching in the program ensuring faculty needs are met. Support may be needed outside or regular and are particularly critical during course development
  • Encourage and fosters faculty interest in instructional design principles and tools including D2L, course design and other programs and systems
  • Design course evaluations to help ensure program learning outcomes are being met and that the quality of the program is of the highest caliber
  • Work in a highly collaborative manner with faculty leading the development of detailed project work plans for each course ensuring consistency, quality and the timely delivery of deliverables
  • Design, plan and develop blended and on-line courses, resources and initiatives to support research-informed learning, instructional and course design practices and approaches
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Evidence of continuous learning regarding new developments within the fields of educational technology, online and blended learning, to respond to the changing curriculum development needs
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills and the ability to establish, maintain and grow effective collegial relationships in a post-secondary environment
  • Proven collaborative strategic planning skills in innovative education practices
  • Experience designing and conducting education program-related research and evaluation preferred
  • Proven ability to work independently but also in a highly collaborative manner with individuals across the organization
  • Excellent, demonstrable knowledge of interface design, web-based resources, multi-media technologies, and learning management systems (i.e. D2L)
  • Demonstrated ability to translate technical concepts to faculty members and students to build their understanding and confidence in curriculum development
  • In depth knowledge of instructional design and technologies, curriculum and course development methods and research, and pedagogical practices in blended/on-line teaching and learning
  • 2 or more years of instructional design experience in higher education using blended/on-line teaching and technologies, web-based training and instructional design is required with at least 2 years of this experience at the post-secondary level
  • Master's degree in Education, Instructional Design, e-Learning/Educational Technologies, Curriculum Design, or equivalent training in a related discipline
