Job Description
INSTRUCTIONAL COACH POSITION IN Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education


Duration: Full time for 12 months, subject to satisfactory performance review following the first two months


Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement .


Start date: September 1, 2023 (start date may be negotiated with Centre Co-directors) Citizenship restrictions: Canadian Citizen/Permanent Resident


Stipend: Secondment with current School Division employer to be negotiated.


Based in the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Education, the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (CMASTE) is a long-standing educational research and development centre that specializes in the synthesis of research, knowledge translation and outreach. The purpose of the Centre is to promote research and development in mathematics, science, and technology education in Canada and beyond, achieved through an academic collective at the University of Alberta who provide a broad range of stakeholder groups a uniquely favourable environment for productive and significant collaborative work.


CMASTE is inviting applications for a full-time, 12-month Instructional Coach position for the project Enhancing Teaching in Higher Education through Research and Practice. The project is implementing an innovative pedagogical training program created for Campus Saint Jean faculty members: "CRÉER-CSJ: Comprendre la Recherche Éducative pour un Enseignement Réussi" (Understanding Educational Research for Successful Teaching). The Instructional Coach will lead implementation of the first cohort(s) of Campus Saint Jean professors and academic teaching staff in CRÉER-CSJ for meaningful, sustained pedagogic development. This individual will facilitate the learning from the CRÉER-CSJ program and support instructors in their work to become more effective instructors who are able to encourage and engage diverse student populations through active and student-centred pedagogies grounded in current research. Instructors will come from a broad range of disciplines including both social sciences & humanities as well as natural & applied sciences.


Responsibilities Include The Following


  • Coordinate with postdoctoral fellow in carrying out program evaluation research.
  • Lead community of practice discussions through forum posts and monthly gatherings. - Mentor experienced instructors to develop pedagogic leadership for future cohorts.
  • Modify online course materials.
  • Attend classes to support and observe instructional practices.
  • Support faculty and teaching staff through consulting in individual conversations, locating specific resources, and co-planning for innovative lessons and application of workplace learning.


Qualified candidates must have a Masters of Education degree. Teaching experience, with demonstrated innovation in active and student-centred approaches, in high school and/or post-secondary in Canadian contexts is required. Native French speaker and fluency in English is required for this position.


The Successful Candidate Will Demonstrate


  • Proficiency with technology platforms, like Google Suite, Moodle, and Articulate 360.
  • Familiarity with educational research in any discipline in education.
  • Delivering professional learning to teachers.
  • Collaborative skills and working as a team member.
  • Recent and ongoing experience in implementing innovative, evidence-based, student-centered pedagogical strategies, primarily in high school.
