Undergraduate Research Assistant Jobs

This part time position has a term length of 3 months with the possibility to renew over the Fall semester.

Position Summary

A summer research assistantship is available in the Beef Cattle Production Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Gleise M. da Silva at the University of Alberta. The research program aims to understand the effects of management practices and weather on beef cattle physiology, behavior, and performance.

The research assistant will work under the direct supervision of graduate students on several projects in different locations (e.g., Kinsella and Mattheis Ranches).

Duties

• Animal and forage sampling; Assist with animal and plant data collection, sample processing (i.e., drying, grinding, centrifuging, etc.) and organization of sampling material.
• Laboratory analyses (using ELISA test kits to determine blood metabolites, or wet chemistry to determine forage chemical composition).

Qualifications

• Strong interpersonal skills
• Availability to travel to research sites
• Cattle handling and laboratory experience will be considered an asset
• A class 5 drivers license will be considered an asset
• Enrollment in a Bachelor of Science degrees in Agriculture, Animal Health, or Agricultural/Food Business Science at U of A is required
• Attention to details
