Job Description
Position Overview
The Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Infectious Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator.
The Snyder Translational Laboratory in Critical Care Medicine and the research lab of the Principal Investigator are dynamic, established laboratories, located in the Health Research and Innovation Center at the University of Calgary. We focus our work on bridging clinical and basic science through exciting state of the art projects.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Assist with standard animal care activities which may include: watering, feeding of animals and monitoring and assessing general animal health
  • Record keeping of the experiments and laboratory tasks performed
  • Accurately performing technical assays and timely troubleshooting
  • Experimental sample processing and analyses
  • Assist with data analysis and interpretation, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications
  • Assist with developing and updating Standard Operating Procedures as required
  • Perform biochemical assays and optimize where required
  • Ensure all work with animals follows the highest standard of animal care
  • Assist with ordering supplies and general inventory control
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Experience with intravital imaging systems is desirable
  • Experience working with BSL2 pathogens and infection models
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills will be an asset
  • Good problem solving abilities
  • Good communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in basic animal care and simple animal surgeries is essential
  • WHIMS Certification
  • Detail oriented and excellent manual dexterity
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • Experience with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues, urine, etc)
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Ability to perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Technical experience in basic molecular biology, and basic immunology techniques such as ELISA and flow cytometry
