Job Summary
This position is responsible for coordinating clinical research projects for the Principal Investigator.
Organizational Status
This position reports directly to the Principal Investigator.
Job Summary
The Research Coordinator will help coordinate research projects in the Elango Lab, which has a primary focus on maternal-child nutrition. The successful candidate will work at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute to conduct research studies, analyze samples and data in women and children that help to optimize diets. The work involved includes assisting with laboratory maintenance tasks including ordering, inventory, maintaining instruments, and orientation of new personnel.
Work Performed
  • Writes reports, papers, presents research results at laboratory meetings and assists with the writing of grant applications.
  • Coordinates, monitors and ensures the implementation and enforcement of laboratory safety rules and procedures.
  • Plans and performs nutrition experiments, utilizing complex procedures or techniques; troubleshoots problems; collects, records, analyzes and interprets experiment results.
  • Assists Principal Investigator with maintaining an isotope ratio mass spectrometer for routine analysis for stable isotope enrichments from study samples, and trouble shoots sample analysis.
  • Assist in running a laboratory, performing tasks, such as, purchasing supplies and minor equipment and maintaining parts of accounts.
  • Sets up, tests, operates and maintains common laboratory and other equipment, including a HPLC, Amino Acid Analyzer, Human Milk Analyzer.
  • Provides training to undergraduate and new graduate students in the use of equipment, techniques and procedures.
  • Performs complex technical tasks such as respiratory gas exchange analysis (indirect calorimetry), body composition analysis (bioelectrical impedance analysis) in human subjects and research participants.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Accuracy, timeliness, and sound judgment are required to maximize the effectiveness of the research being conducted. Errors in ability to perform administrative and technical tasks may lead to concerns about research credibility and integrity.
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision of the Principal Investigator; receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new or unusual problems.
Supervision Given
May oversee and direct the work of one or two employees at lower classifications in which case they are responsible for the accuracy, production, and control of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
