Job Description


LAB COORDINATOR


FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES


NorQuesters are difference makers and we’re searching for someone dedicated to being dependable in the maintenance of our science laboratory as our learners gain direct experience through hands on learning that can be applied to real-life situations in an inclusive and welcoming environment.


Reporting to the Chair, Arts and Sciences, the Lab Coordinator will consult with Arts and Sciences instructors whose courses use the science lab, including Biology, Chemistry, and Earth and Atmospheric Science courses. The Coordinator will maintain lab equipment, order materials when needed, prepare weekly lab sessions for instructors and learners, perform safe cleaning and disposal of lab materials, and ensure the lab is ready for instructor and learner use.


How You'll Make a Difference


  • Establish schedule for lab preparation and delivery in according with semester timetable and academic schedules.
  • Receive and store orders.
  • Prepare lab materials and specimens according to schedule.
  • Safely clean and store lab materials after use.
  • Ensure labs are set up prior to use.
  • Maintain order and cleanliness of lab rooms and storage areas.
  • Safely dispose of lab waste using appropriate methods.
  • Co-ordinate with administrative staff to establish and maintain accounts with supply vendors.
  • Act as resource for lab equipment use.
  • Assist with lab safety instruction and monitoring.
  • Maintain up-to-date, comprehensive inventory of lab equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinate pickup/disposal of chemical/biological waste.
  • Conduct routine checks of lab equipment and arrange maintenance, repairs, and replacement as necessary.
  • Track and order general supplies on a regular basis.


What You Bring


  • Knowledge and proficiency with standard lab equipment including microscopes, autoclaves, gas burners, specimens, chemicals, etc.
  • 1+ years' experience in a post-secondary Bio/Chem lab setting.
  • Bachelor of Science in a related field (e.g. Biology, Bio-Chem).

  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with external suppliers.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to trouble shoot the operation of lab equipment.
  • Ability to anticipate lab necessities.


SALARY: $846 - $1,099.50 biweekly reflective upon what you bring AKA your education and experience. This is a part-time (0.5 FTE) permanent role with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) and includes immediate access to our great pension and benefits programs.


This position will require regular on-campus work at our Downtown Edmonton location.
