Working for the Department/Faculty
The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is made up of eight divisions and training programs. We provide five residency training programs, eight MD fellowship programs, four clinical PhD fellowship programs, a graduate studies program that also includes, a pathologists' assistant program and an undergraduate program.
Our major areas of research include analytical and environmental toxicology, transplantation and immunology, diagnostic and applied microbiology, molecular mechanisms in cancer and lymphoproliferative disorders, cryobiology and tissue preservation. Faculty and clinical faculty are partners in clinical research, and we collaborate on research projects with the Departments of Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Public Health Sciences, and Anthropology.
Position
The Laboratory Coordinator position primarily provides the lead for the laboratory section of MLSCI 242: Pathogenic Microbiology I, a year 2 course in the Division of Medical Laboratory Science (MLS). This role involves coordination of all lab activities for students: including lab preparation of bacterial cultures, delivery of pre lab lectures, instruction during lab session and managing student assessments. Although microbiology is the major function, this position also requires knowledge and ability to deliver content and laboratory preparation for other disciplines of laboratory medicine to support other MLS courses.
Duties
  • Prepare and present laboratory lectures (instructions on how to perform the laboratory techniques)
  • Laboratory Support for other disciplines of laboratory medicine student labs.
  • Community Engagement Activities: Assists with planning community events such as Discovery and Horizon Days, Open House.
  • Safety: Ensure WHMIS is followed: maintain safety data sheets, ensure workplace labels are used appropriately
  • Laboratory Coordinator for Microbiology
  • Responsible for inventory management: Order supplies, maintains equipment, arranges equipment repairs, sources new or replacement equipment
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to work independently as part of, and liaison with a dynamic teaching team
  • Current registration with College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta required and maintained annually
  • 5-8 years experience in a post secondary environment teaching laboratory
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility, adaptability and able to take on new tasks
  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science
  • General certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science required
  • 1-2 years experience with clinical laboratory medicine
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters or Doctorate is an asset
