BUSINESS AND STEM STUDENT ADVISOR


FACULTY OF BUSINESS, ENVIRONMENT, AND TECHNOLOGY


NorQuesters are difference makers and we’re searching for someone dedicated to finding ways forward to join our Faculty of Business, Environment and Technology (FBET) team as a Student Advisor in our Business and STEM program areas. Reporting to the Academic Program Manager (APM), the Student Advisor carries out a range of activities including student program advising, student engagement, student success and student progress monitoring. They will act as the key program area contact for recruitment, liaison to the Office of the Registrar and Student Services, and partner with the program leadership team. They will work on monitoring student progress and proactively engage with current and future learners to address various challenges.


This position requires a high degree of responsibility, accountability, initiative, and leadership in a variety of operational areas. Excellent communication and liaising skills are required to work with students, internal college areas, and external stakeholders.


The ideal candidates will have an advanced level of knowledge about the program architecture, course sequencing, specializations, as well as admission processes for the following programs at both the college and other post-secondary institutions (PSIs)


  • Business Administration Diploma, Accounting Technician, and Administrative Professional (Business Student Advisor), or
  • Energy Management, Environmental Technician, and Machine Learrning Analyst (STEM Student Advisor)


Depending on the program, this may include information on transfer-receiving PSIs, such as changing competitive GPA requirements, admissions requirements, high school and post-secondary applicant status at the pertinent post-secondaries, language requirements, core high school subjects, and rules around using post-secondary credits in lieu of core high school subjects, and dual credit. The advisor will maintain relationships will play a key role in championing pathways like Open Admission Pathways, LINC Business, and future pathways initiatives.


How You'll Make a Difference


  • Refer students to support areas as required, such as the Student Readiness and Retention teams, the Office of the Registrar, Student Assessment, Student Financial Aid, Centre for Growth and Wellness, Library and Tutorial Services, Office of Student Judicial Affairs, and Work Integrated Learning and Career Education Centre.
  • Counsel students regarding course load, returning to the program after absences, transferring in from other PSIs, and program delivery transfers.
  • Meet individually with students to advise them on student pathways related to their academic and professional goals including assisting students in creating pathways to other post-secondary institutions, and, when necessary, help students navigate the application process to other post- secondary institutions.
  • Provide support and training regarding the program area(s) for the Retention team and serve as program liaison on the subject of student pathways and progress.
  • Research external pathway opportunities and advise the team on block transfer agreements as part of program development or expansion.
  • Triage student issues before they are escalated to program leaders. The Advisor will be the first point of contact to find solutions for learners.
  • Provide support on projects, especially those related to enrollment, learner pathways, transfer credit agreements, and students supports.
  • Maintain relationships with transfer credit officers to ensure the program and Faculty has up-to-date information for students on transfer agreements and degree pathways.
  • Maintain communication with internal and external stakeholders as required and work with APM and Program chairs to complete early term prerequisite reporting. Prerequisite exceptions are reported to admissions.
  • Create reports and coordinate dashboard development showing learner progressions.
  • Create, run, and analyze reports to be proactive and intervene with advice and guidance to enable student success in the program. This may result in contacting students when progress is out of sync, required courses are missing, and redirection is required.
  • When necessary, review academic performance with students to ensure that they are on track to succeed in their goals; work with instructors to ensure student success, and make recommendations to students for supports.


What You Bring


  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited postsecondary institution in a related field or a combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, including the needs of Indigenous, International, and immigrant learners.
  • 5+ years of related advising and student support experience in a post-secondary environment.
  • Expertise in program architecture, curriculum, course sequencing, pathways, and supporting learners.

SALARY $2,336 - $3,033 biweekly ($60,724 - $78,850 annually) reflective upon what you bring AKA your education and experience. This is a full-time term position with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) to August 14, 2024 and includes immediate access to our great benefits program.
