Program Description:
Planned Parenthood Toronto’s (PPT) Health Services offer a full range of primary and sexual health care services to Toronto youth aged 13 to 29 years. Services include primary care, anonymous HIV testing, sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, birth control information and prescriptions, pregnancy testing and options, medical abortion, pre-natal care, mental health counselling, system navigation, and health promotion activities. In addition to providing medical abortion to clients, we also provide a range of abortion access supports, largely to clients without OHIP. PPT’s Post Abortion Support Program offers peer-based group support to young people, particularly those without OHIP, who have experienced an abortion and are looking for an opportunity to connect with peers. Groups will utilize participatory and arts-based activities to provide space for participants to reflect on their experience, navigate any complicated feelings related to relief, isolation, or discrimination, build social support networks and share resources. The Post Abortion Support Program Coordinator will develop, implement (including facilitation), and evaluate PPT’s peer-based post abortion support groups (offered virtually and in-person).
Specific Responsibilities
- Facilitate appropriate referrals to resources and community supports, as needed
- Facilitate groups using a non-judgemental, client-centered, trauma-informed, anti-oppressive approach.
- Develop/revise the peer-based post abortion support group curriculum and program design.
- Under the direction of the Director of Community Health Services, and in collaboration with the Health Services team:
- Maintain accurate records and other administrative activities.
- Promote group, recruit participants, carry out intake.
- Monitor and evaluate group progress, and provide verbal and written reports
Other Responsibilities:
- Participate in the orientation and training of new staff as requested by Executive Director or their Manager.
- Available to work some evenings and weekends as required.
- Contribute to a culture of philanthropy at the agency that may include participating in fundraising initiatives and/or acting as ambassadors for the agency.
- Participate at staff and team meetings and other activities/meetings related to the agency, as requested.
- Act in accordance with PPT’s Vision, Mission, Equity Vision, Values and Principles, and Policies and Procedures.
- Demonstrate openness and responsiveness to emerging client and community needs as identified by the agency.
- Work in support of the agency’s commitment to be at the forefront in the utilization of technology to offer innovative programming and services.
- Other duties related to the role or based on agency need, as required.
- Actively participates in agency’s accreditation process as directed by the Executive Director.
- As it relates to this position, fulfill responsibilities outlined by the agency’s funders.
- Work in alignment with the agency’s strategic plan.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree in social work or other related field with 1-2 years work and/ or volunteer experience in a similar role OR 4-5 years work and/or volunteer experience in a similar role.
- Demonstrated knowledge of or interest in reproductive justice and sexual and reproductive health issues for youth.
- Demonstrated experience facilitating support groups, including experience with arts-based, story-telling, and other participatory approaches.
·Commitment to pro-choice philosophy.
- Ability to speak Punjabi, Hindi and/or Spanish an asset.
- Knowledge or experience with abortion support and the kinds of emotional and social issues relevant to abortion care.
- Knowledge of abortion access in Ontario, including for those without OHIP, an asset.
- Lived experience with abortion an asset.
- Lived experience of migration an asset.
- Knowledge of the experience of migration by young people in Ontario, including migrant workers and undocumented people.
·Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
·Proficiency and experience working in a computerized environment.
·Demonstrated commitment to: equity goals and principles; youth positive, LGBTQ positive, and sex positive advocacy; and, sexual and reproductive rights and to being inclusive of diverse sexual and gender identities.
·Commitment to working from a community development perspective.
- Commitment to working cooperatively in a community-based setting as part of an inter-disciplinary team.
·Available to work flexible hours, including evenings and occasional weekend hours.
