Job Description
Majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island, the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80,000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. Just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate and numerous parks, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities.


Are you a dynamic and progressive administrative professional with a keen interest in serving your local community? We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join the CVRD in the newly created role of Office Coordinator.


Reporting to the Corporate Officer (Manager), Legislative Services Division, the Office Coordinator performs a range of coordination functions for the CVRD main office, including managing and scheduling the casual and part time administrative staff to meet the temporary administrative needs of the main office; coordinating office operations including the supply and function of business machines, technology, products, and furnishings; establishing, maintaining, and implementing administrative standards, policies, and procedures as well as leading the administrative support team; and acting as a liaison to and between staff and external stakeholders for office and administrative matters. This position also provides professional, confidential, and discrete executive administrative services to the Corporate Officer in support of the Legislative Services Division. The work is complex, diverse, politically sensitive or controversial, and highly confidential in nature.


As our ideal candidate, you possess the following


  • Experience working in local government is preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of the activities of the CVRD and familiarity with the operation of Boards and committees
  • 6 years of recent, relevant, and progressive experience in a complex office administration coordination role, including working with senior level staff
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
  • Certificate in Local Government Administration is preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of organizational practices and best practices related to corporate standards, office workflow procedures/routines, business machines and technology, and building security
  • Courses and / or experience in web design/maintenance, computer-assisted graphic design, and social media are considered an asset
  • Training and experience in staff leadership supervision, mentoring, and performance managing staff
  • 6-month certificate in office or business administration, or legal assistant program
  • An understanding of collective agreements and how they are applied in a unionized workplace

This regular full-time position works 35 hours per week (Monday – Friday, 830-430). Some evening and / or weekend work may be expected to meet operational requirements. This position is eligible for the CVRD’s Flex Time Program, and is eligible to be considered for Work From Home on a part-time basis (likely 1-2 days / week).


The CVRD offers a competitive salary starting at $90,456.32 commensurate with experience plus a comprehensive benefits package including extended health / dental / insurance, pension, and paid vacation (starting at 3 weeks / year).
