Senior Systems Administrator Jobs

Our Calgary-based partner requires a Senior Systems/Database Administrator that will be responsible for the management, operation, and maintenance of the IT Infrastructure. The organization's key business systems, processes, and data rely on a solid infrastructure foundation to ensure we continue to deliver for our customers across our many service streams.

This role will work in partnership with and support of the other functions in Business Intelligence, Data Engineering, and Technology & Security (BITS) to deliver key Infrastructure offerings across our Hybrid environment.

This role will focus on implementing, configuring, maintaining, and monitoring all aspects of our environment to allow other teams to focus on application, data, and service delivery and not on the infrastructure. The scope of the role includes computing, databases, virtualization, backups, storage, and system monitoring/management tools.

Responsibilities:

• Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation.
• Own and optimize database services including implementation, backup, management, security, and updates.
• Perform packaging, management, patching, monitoring, and improvement of OS images and associated business applications.
• Managing the day-to-day operations of IT & Database Infrastructure:
• Support our customers through cloud-related issues that are escalated through various channels of communication such as our ticket system & Teams support channels.
• Identify risks to the infrastructure of the organization and suggest mitigation strategies to reduce risk to an acceptable level.
• Report on system performance to support operational needs and capacity planning.
• Ensure that issues with servers and storage are resolved promptly.
• Work with the Data Engineering & other IT teams to address database needs.
• Lead problem-solving and troubleshooting efforts that may involve outside vendors and other support personnel and/or the business.
• Ensure acceptable performance levels of mission-critical resources are achieved and maintained.
• Participate in urgent all-hands service issues, including incident response, and perform Route Cause Analysis post-incident.
• Monitor system performance, configuration, maintenance, and repair to maximize the business use of the infrastructure. This includes hardware, firmware, operating systems, and software.

Infrastructure Projects:

• Present and communicate Infrastructure-related changes and implementations to the wider team.
• Participate as a subject matter expert and reference for new designs, implementations, and technologies.
• Work with business stakeholders to define or capture business and systems requirements for new initiatives where technology is a key component.
• Stay current with technological developments in systems administration technology and recommend ways for the organization to take advantage of new technology.
• Create, maintain, and update documentation.
• Manage the implementation of infrastructure initiatives and show leadership in evolving the practices and methodology.

People & Process:

• Adhere to IT policies and procedures, including those for architecture, disaster recovery, business continuity, security, standards, purchasing, and service provision.
• Work alongside other Technology Enablement team members to ensure security standards and processes are implemented, maintained, and optimized.
• Coach and mentor other team members who have a desire to learn about Infrastructure technology and services.
• Participate in periodic security penetration testing and provide knowledge and expertise where appropriate to advance organizations' security posture and maturity.

Required Experience:

• Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Strong technical knowledge of IT infrastructure systems (Windows Servers, VMWare, Citrix & VDI, backup software, storage technology).
• Ability to self-direct and project management small-scale infrastructure projects.
• Azure/AWS Cloud experience would be an asset.
• Proven experience implementing and operating multiple aspects of the IT infrastructure.
• Strong technical knowledge of MS SQL database administration and optimization.
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
• University or college degree in Computer Science or equivalent real-world experience.
• A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience.
• Highly self-motivated with excellent prioritization and time management skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Working knowledge of networks (i.e.: firewalls, routers, switches, etc.).
