Vision
At the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA), we celebrate and honour the safety and healing of Indigenous Women and Girls as they take up their leadership roles in the family, community, provincially, nationally and internationally for generations to come.
Scope
Reporting to the Senior Director for Community Development, the Director of Community Development will provide strategic direction and leadership in the design, implementation, and administration of the Community Development Portfolio. The Director will ensure the Community Development Portfolio tells the story of the work that is ongoing to support Indigenous Women while meeting outcomes.
Community Development is focused on the reclaiming of Indigenous women’s voices and leadership within their community through Education/Training, Capacity Building, Awareness Campaigns and Living Programs. The Community Development framework is based on ONWA’s Theory of Change which recognizes Indigenous Women are the experts in their lives and know the solutions to issues we experience. This portfolio is focused on supporting both Indigenous women’s agencies and the Grassroots Indigenous women’s movement.
As part of the Leadership Team and leading a group of Community Development Managers and Community Coordinators, the Director of Community Development will direct the development and implementation of strategies for engagement to build relationships, partnerships and support Indigenous women’s agencies and Grassroots Indigenous women’s movement.
This role has the overall accountability for ensuring ONWA’s strategic goals have measurable outcomes within the portfolio that support the leadership of Indigenous women in community. The Director of Community Development must clearly ensure the support provided is inclusive and respectful of all cultures.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience with strategic planning and multi-year work plans.
  • Highly motivated, ability to work with no supervision and able to meet strict deadlines.
  • The ability to speak an Indigenous Language is considered an asset.
  • Capacity to pro-actively solve problems and to see different perspectives.
  • Established network of or ability to network with other community agencies, services, and organizations.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capacity to problem solve and strong negotiating ability.
  • Experience creating and implementing manuals that support the department and/or Chapters.
  • Demonstrated experience providing services to Indigenous families and/or communities.
  • Extensive experience successfully facilitating and presenting at community engagements/meetings and/ or groups.
  • Reliable vehicle, appropriate vehicle insurance coverage and valid Ontario “G” class driver’s license.
  • Current, valid vulnerable sector criminal records check. Valid 1st Aid/CPR.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and success in preparing and writing proposals.
  • Thorough understanding of not-for-profit governance.
  • Ability to build relationships with other communities, community agencies, services, organization, and government, building strong working relationships.
  • Must understand budget administration and managing contribution agreements.
  • Exceptional capacity for managing, leading, and mentoring people from diverse backgrounds with a commitment to investing in and developing staff and positioning them to succeed.
  • Proven IT skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and databases.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and Indigenous communities throughout the province of Ontario.
  • Ability to travel when required; if the role is in Toronto or Ottawa, the incumbent is expected to travel to the Thunder Bay office once a month for a period of a few days to meet and work with their team.
  • Ability to think strategically, critically and implement solutions that supports community development.
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive leadership experience with a not-for-profit organization and must have demonstrated experience in influencing community change; equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job
  • Essential is foundational knowledge of the issues affecting Indigenous Women.
  • A cellular phone and internet access is required within this position
  • Understands Indigenous Community Development and Indigenous communities throughout the province of Ontario as it relates to their needs.
  • Accustomed to managing multiple projects simultaneously; excellent organizational skills and ability to direct staff and programming deliverable.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible working from home arrangement, if required. This may include a combination of virtual remote work in your home and in-office arrangements. This will be based on operational needs and will be determined by the ONWA.
  • ONWA is committed on implementing measures to protect its community members, staff, and other stakeholders from COVID-19. As a result, ONWA has implemented a mandatory vaccination policy. Exemptions will be made for those with a valid medical exemption; proof of the exemption will be required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area such as Health, Social Work, Public Policy and/or Public Education, Women’s Studies, Indigenous Learning; Master’s degree preferred
