The Canadian Red Cross Connected Communities project aims to support older adults in select Toronto Seniors Housing (TSH) buildings in Englemount-Lawrence Neighbourhood to improve their overall health and wellbeing by fostering social connections and enabling individuals to live independently.


The Coordinator, Community Development is a passionate and inspirational individual with a desire to support older adults in the community. The Coordinator, Community Development position has two aspects a) engaging community members to build a sense of connection, trust, and collaboration, and b) supporting individual older adults to identify their needs and get connected to resources and services in the community.


In This Role, You Will


Responsibility 1: Community Engagement-Working with TSH Building Residents


  • Accompany older adults to programs and activities when and if needed.
  • Actively recruit residents to join CRC's program in the building.
  • Promote local community events, programs, services, and activities to the residents and encourage their participation.
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including community medical and social support services, to identify and/or create 'out of the box' solutions to address clients' needs.
  • Organize local community events, and weekly drop-in sessions with stimulating activities for residents.
  • Support "Caring Neighbours" to help other neighbours when they can.
  • Engage with organizations to increase the number of partnerships, awareness of programs and improve depth of existing ones.
  • Research, develop and keep current a community information resources tool/guide for reference.
  • Encourage and support residents to start resident-led activities.
  • Represent the program in a variety of contexts with a diverse range of internal/external audiences.


Responsibility 2: Community Connector-Working with Individual older adults


  • Provide personalized support to older adult client(s), to identify their health-related goals, and to provide referrals to community resources as needed.
  • Support older adults to connect to their neighbours, individuals, and organizations that can help them stay independent and/or improve their quality of life.
  • Visit with client(s) in the project site to administer non-invasive surveys and questionnaires and follow-ups accordingly.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of community programs and services and acts as resource in the community.


Responsibility 3: Volunteer Management


  • Assist volunteers to support their clients navigate the system and get connected with resources.
  • In conjunction with Volunteer Engagement team and project coordinator, support recruiting volunteers specifically older adult, and/or Russian speaking volunteers.
  • Supervise volunteers to administer non-invasive surveys, and questionnaires and follow-ups accordingly.
  • Assist onboarding, managing, training, evaluating, and recognizing the volunteers.


Responsibility 4: Documentation and reporting


  • Contribute to project evaluation by collecting and reporting relevant project data in a timely manner.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and work with the team to develop coordinated responses.
  • Prepare regular project reports, including status updates, progress reports, and performance metrics, by gathering data from various sources, analyzing it, and presenting it in a clear and concise manner.


What We Are Looking For


  • Experience working with older adults.
  • Previous experience in community engagement, community development, or a similar role.
  • Ability to successfully navigate challenging conversations among diverse groups and build consensus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and build relationships with diverse community members.
  • Strong knowledge about community resources, health and social system in Toronto.
  • Knowledge of community organizing principles and techniques.
  • Empathy, patience and compassion with the capacity to remain calm in unexpected situations.
  • Excellent organizational and project management abilities, with the capacity to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with local community dynamics, issues, and resources.
  • Bachelor's degree in community development, social work, nursing, public administration, or a related field and three years' job-related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This includes experience in Community Program Development or an equivalent.
  • Fluency in speaking and written Russian is considered an asset.


Working Conditions


  • If you are selected for this role, you will be required to complete a successful pre-employment screening process which includes a satisfactory Enhanced Police Information Check (E-PIC).
  • The successful candidate is required to work at the project site several days a week.
  • Occasional evening/weekend work but predominantly Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.
