Job description:

The Director Technology – Data is accountable to drive value through data availability, quality, and protection. Leads and directs a global team of technology professionals focused on creating and executing on a strategic roadmap aligned with the Allstate Canada Group (ACG) business strategy and priorities. The roadmap ensures a balanced approach to ensure technical excellence, adherence to corporate standards and regulatory requirements, and drives value through new features, initiatives, and programs that enable and differentiate ACG via technology solutions.


Accountabilities:


1. Technology Leadership – 20%

· Creates, maintains, and evolves a 2- to 4-year forward looking data technology roadmap for the area that aligns with the Technology department direction, business value and target state architecture (TSA).

· Improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the company by identifying, researching, and implementing / deploying new data technologies that drive business value and insight for customers, employees and ACG’s business.

· Coaches, develops and evolves technology skills and technical leadership in the data technology team globally for Allstate Canada’s team and works with the enterprise in collaborating on Allstate’s outcomes

· Ensures the integrity and optimization of currently deployed technologies (i.e capabilities, cost and skills)

· Collaborating with a cross functional team this role will ensure that data governance, regulatory, privacy and compliance needs are proactively by design and operationally met (i.e. OSFI, Allstate Data Standards, Audit alignment, Canada Privacy, Data Classification alignment)

· Liaises with local and global Data and Analytics leadership, data technology, enterprise teams and across Technology teams to ensure the team data access and controls meet the needs of the organization via established and/or new architectural patterns.


2. Team Leadership – 40%

· Demonstrates holistic and in-depth business acumen of the enterprise, insurance, and protection industry and the ACG landscape.

· Demonstrates thought leadership in their area of accountability to provide inspiration and motivation toward a forward-looking culture.

· Demonstrates a strong, visible, and continued commitment to the attraction, development, and retention of talent.

· Ensures that talent and domain competencies are built and maintained to foster execution, learning, and development and create excellent performance that unleashes innovation.

· Fosters an environment that both expects change and manages it effectively and efficiently to motivate and empower employees.

· Maintains a commitment to making organizational improvements across teams via the creation and maintenance of a positive, safe, healthy, and productive work climate.

· Establishes and promotes performance standards and conducts ongoing performance review discussions to ensure employee performance continually meets or exceeds objectives.

· Provides ongoing coaching and continuous training /development opportunities to individuals and teams.


3. General Management and Decision-Making – 20%

· Develops complex ideas and organization strategy that have long-term, strategic impact and aligns with organization's direction.

· Responsible for strategy implementation across 3-year timeframes, including high-level planning for work and resources.

· Communicates the strategy to the organization so they understand their roles, are motivated to achieve established goals, and have line-of-sight between their work and Allstate strategies.

· Converts thinking of others or gains acceptance of difficult but necessary complex ideas to achieve goals and objectives.

· Leads teams in achieving significant, complex assignments.

· Creates structures and processes that provide oversight of budgets and delivery yet allow employees freedom of action.

· Applies knowledge and efforts to diverse and complex situations, where alternatives are numerous, to drive business solutions on behalf of the organization.

· Makes decisions with an impact on quality or effectiveness of business activities beyond the area of responsibility.

· Financial accountability for overseeing budgets (managed directly by managers) including forecasts, actuals, and business cases.

· Creates structures and processes for direct reports, peer groups, leaders, and the organization to promote an environment of innovation and experimentation.


4. Stakeholder Relationship Management – 20%

· Leverages external industry relationships to improve the organization.

· Serves as a representative of Allstate in the industry.

· Influences individual contributors, managers, partners, service providers, senior leaders, executives, and peers to successfully deliver on business commitments spanning multiple organizations and levels of complexity.

· Leads the process of setting and managing expectations

· Continually seeks opportunities to be a thought partner, increase internal and external business partner satisfaction, and deepen relationships.

· Contributes to overall information technology strategic planning and business technology planning processes by providing a current knowledge and future vision.


Qualifications:

  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to convey information in an organized, effective manner to a wide variety of technical and non-technical audiences, including Fortune 500 executives.
  • Business acumen and data-driven decision-making skills.
  • 10+ years of experience developing, coaching, and leading organizations with a global footprint.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Engineering, Business, or related discipline.
  • Expertise in staffing, coaching and growing a highly technical leadership team of data technologists
  • Agile project management processes (e.g. Scrum, Lean, Kanban, SAFe, etc.).
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication, presentation, and collaboration skills with tact and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated track record of growth in complex organizations.
  • Proven ability to champion change, inspire a shared vision and promote key values driving urgency and execution.
  • Experience working with RFx processes and working with suppliers and vendors to select suppliers and/or outsourcing agreements that enable solutions.
  • Experience balancing the data technology roadmap with the feature roadmap.
  • Exceptional skills at building relationships, collaborating with others, and providing a supportive environment where questions that challenge opinions are encouraged.
  • Management and leadership principles and techniques.
  • Requires 10+ years of experience in a leadership role, preferably in the insurance or financial services industry.
  • Expertise in the software development life cycle (SDLC), preferably in Agile methodologies.
  • Project management, prioritization, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Managing global teams and working in a global ecosystem.
  • Analytical, critical, and strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Expertise in developing a robust data platform to support organizational outcomes with business agility including: data analytics / insights, real-time data, privacy, data security and regulatory compliance.


Bonus qualification:

  • Data technology certifications would be an asset.
  • A Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) would be an asset.
