The Toronto Business Development Centre (TBDC) is Canada’s first business incubator that has helped 9,000 local and international entrepreneurs succeed for more than three decades. TBDC targets international entrepreneurs that are looking to build businesses in Ontario.
As a non-profit that seeks to drive value, TBDC continues to look for opportunities to help entrepreneurs establish, grow and scale by enhancing its suite of resources and business services that aids high-potential entrepreneurs to go-to market and scale.
Through TBDC’s OINP initiativeglobal entrepreneurs are recruited from around the world and supported through the application process. In collaboration with external partners, key stakeholders and a team of qualified personnel, TBDC will be looking to recruit 100 entrepreneurs from around the world to immigrate to Ontario and support job creation initiatives.
The Role
Reporting to the Project director OINP, the Business Development Manager (BDM) will be responsible for building relationships with local governments including municipalities, communities, and business associations within Ontario. In addition, work closely with the Project Director OINP to develop and implement a multi-national strategy to ensure effective international lead generation, partnerships, and client acquisition.
The role will require implementation of a business development strategy in Ontario, providing community education, guidance to team members and on a situational basis take a leadership role in the engagement process. The Business Development Manager will work from TBDC to lead engagement initiatives in communities outside the GTA. Travel within Ontario will be required.
Job Responsibilities
The main job requirements and responsibilities for the Business Development Manager are:
- Identifying potential sales to quickly determine the appropriate amount of time to dedicate to each call
- Completing calls by recording purchases, names, and addresses as well as other important information
- Persuading potential customers to make a purchase or take another kind of action using a prepared script and additional information
- Develop and implement a partnership strategy across Ontario that will build and maintain a positive working relationship
- Have a comprehensive understanding on how to engage with stakeholders such as economic development organizations, local chambers and business seller
- Facilitate introduction to professionals for international entrepreneurs to conduct their assessment of businesses that are for sale
- Understanding prospects’ needs and determining what offerings suit them best
- Actively identify business opportunities that are available within the target communities
- Gathering data on sales leads for further marketing analysis
- Maintain a database of business sellers and business creation opportunities
- Continuously support the refinement of the Business Development Plan
- Collaborate with the marketing team to provide feedback and strategies to improve local marketing campaigns
- Partnership development for lead generation and networking activities both domestic and internationally
- Prospect, acquire and maintain relationships within the target communities to identify new business and succession opportunities to match with international entrepreneurs
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education
- An MBA would be an asset
Experience
- Experience in community engagement
- 5 years of experience in Sales/Business Development
- Experience with providing business advisory services
Other Requirements
- Valid G license and vehicle
- Ability to work within an agile environment
- Experience with economic development initiatives in the public sector would be an asset
- Sound judgment ability to work independently
- Comfortable with ambiguity
- Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal, presentation and influencing skills
- Coaching ability
- Previous experience in a business development role in a startup environment will be preferred
- Diverse stakeholder management experience
- Computer and communications proficient
Job Type: Contract, 12 months
Salary: $75,000 - $85,000
Employment Type: Salaried
Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9AM – 5PM, work outside of standard hours may be required
