Job Description
Position Overview
The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a 2 Summer Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The successful candidates for this position will work with Dr. Jennifer Leason and her research lab team. We are looking for three (2) summer student research assistants. Funding will be provided to candidates that are either recent high school graduates, or undergraduate/recent undergraduate grads that are looking for summer internship work, learning opportunities in a research setting, and work experiences in academic research. Students will report to the Research Manager and principle investigator
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Preform needs assessments or consult with clients and community leaders to determine types of research information required
  • Develop and implement research quality control procedures
  • Prepare tables, graphs, facts sheets, and written reports of research results
  • Assist with the preparation of project related reporting, manuscripts, and presentations
  • Prepare and edit any ethics applications and/or protocols required for research documentation
  • Complete interviews or surveys with research participants
  • Apply a culturally relevant gender-based analysis to all work, project materials, resources and tools
  • Present research findings to stakeholders, communities, and participants
  • Verify the accuracy and validity of data entered and correct errors
  • Transcribe and code data
  • Track research participants, and preform necessary follow-up tasks
  • Prepare, manipulate, and manage data bases
  • Prepare information or documents related to legal or regulatory matters
  • Conduct internet based and library research reviews
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Relevant experience working or volunteering with Not-for-Profit Organizations or Corporations is an asset
  • Understanding of trauma informed care and communication, and sensitivity when working with marginalized populations
  • Ability to work within feminist and social justice theory and practices
  • Proven ability to synthesize information
  • Worked with marginalized communities and an understanding of social determinants of health and wellness
  • Proven organizational skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including experiences with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to set priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Experiences and education in Indigenous epistemologies and methodologies
  • Experience using MaxQDA, NVIVO, and Endnotes software
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, and confidentiality when dealing with external agencies and researchers
  • Demonstrates proficiency in resource planning
  • Exceptional interpersonal and active listening skills, including cultural safety and competency
  • High School Diploma or Undergraduate Degree
  • Experiences with literature reviews and academic publishing
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Demonstrate ability to write reports, letters, and other materials clearly and concisely
  • Effective time management skills, including ability to meet timelines and deadlines
  • Experience with digital story telling methods
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
