Sessional Instructor: NEUR 421, Neuroscience Program, Faculty of Science
Position Description:
The Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Sessional Instructor for the Fall 2023 term.¿ The successful candidate will have the responsibilities of the instruction and any other associated duties for the NEUR421 course.
NEUR 421 - Neuroscience: History, Ethics and Society
Neuroscience 421 (NEUR 421) explores concepts and theories in neuroscience from historical, ethical, and societal perspectives. Students completing the course will have acquired insight in the processes, thinking, methods and historic milestones underpinning modern neuroscience, and will be able to discuss the role of neuroscience and neuroscience research in contemporary society.
Teaching Schedule: TR 09:30 - 10:45
Delivery Mode: All course components will be delivered in-person.
Fall 2023 Term Dates: August 28, 2023, to December 22, 2023.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have a PhD in a neuroscience-related discipline and a broad background in fundamental and applied neuroscience. The candidate must be flexible, reliable, and student-oriented with excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience with undergraduate teaching in relevant areas of neuroscience and the University of Calgary online teaching environment and systems will be considered advantageous.
Candidates with two or more of the following characteristics are encouraged to apply:
  • Academic interest in the future of neuroscience.
  • Teaching and research experience in basic and/or applied neuroscience including experimental neuroscience on laboratory animals and/or human subjects.
  • Familiarity with the ethics, history or societal aspects of neuroscience and related disciplines.

The BSc Neuroscience program is an extra-departmental, multidisciplinary honours program offered by the Faculty of Science in conjunction with the Faculty of Arts (Department of Psychology), the Cummins School of Medicine (CSM), and the Hotchkiss Brain Research Institute (HBI). Embracing curiosity-driven, discovery-based and hands-on learning principles, the program offers a comprehensive "bench-to-bedside and molecule-to-behaviour" interdisciplinary neuroscience curriculum integrating fundamental and applied aspects of neuroscience with a research-intensive training experience and ample opportunities to work with world-class neuroscientists in their pursuit of the unknown. Remuneration is calculated according to the Collective Agreement, Schedule B. Please see the Faculty Association's website at www.tucfa.com for further information regarding conditions of employment and remuneration.
As per the Collective Agreement, the Neuroscience Program will adhere to the right of first refusal terms (Section 23.12.1 and 23.12.2) for Sessional Appointments.
