Job Description
Position Overview
The Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Position Title for approximately 24 months.
Reporting to the Manager, Undergraduate Learning Services, the Bioscience Support Technician is responsible for providing technical support to faculty, staff, and students for all departments within the Faculty of Science with primary duties in the Biosciences Department under the guidance and mentorship of the Bioscience Technical Team Leads. This includes lab setups, trouble shooting, maintaining, and modifying laboratory teaching protocols and equipment used in variety of undergraduate courses. There is a high volume of work of varying complexity and with short timelines for completion.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Course Support:
  • Remain current in software and application requirements.
  • Demonstrate laboratory techniques to teaching assistants and assist teaching team in enriching laboratory experience of undergraduate students in the faculty.
  • Participate, when required, in the training of graduate teaching assistants.
  • Laboratory support may include a variety of undergraduate courses in a wide range of biological science fields.
  • Recommend changes to methods, procedures and practices as appropriate to improve student experience.
  • Work collaboratively and assist other technicians in Faculty of Science using same equipment and supporting common courses.
  • Assist graduate teaching assistants, prepare lab materials, and perform lab demonstrations in consultation with the course instructor and Bioscience Technical Team Leads.
  • Assist course and laboratory coordinators in planning and designing new experiments.
Technical:
  • Ensures that the teaching laboratories are a clean and safe environment for teaching assistants and students by following proper safety protocol and procedures.
  • Assemble and disassemble weekly laboratory setup.
  • Plan, organize and bring together available materials needed for every experiment.
  • Dispense laboratory materials to students.
  • Process chemical waste disposal and maintain laboratory information in Chematix.
  • Equipment testing and calibration may be required.
  • Ensure safety regulations are followed in laboratories.
  • Prepare solutions, media, reagents or buffers as well as maintain required model specimens or samples for undergraduate teaching labs within timelines for weekly student labs.
  • Responsible for inventory and ordering of general lab supplies, specialized chemicals, biological organisms, and equipment for teaching lab exercises.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Previous experience working with Peoplesoft and D2L is an asset.
  • Experience in using and handling live microorganisms is an asset.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols.
  • Ability to lift and transport boxes and equipment weighing up to 25 Kilograms.
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures is an asset.
  • Experience using spectrophotometer, centrifuge and automated plate pourer is an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years of directly related hands-on experience through course-work, internship, or prior work experience.
  • Computer skills including MS Office Suite (including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel)..
  • Proficiency in basic laboratory procedures including pipetting, solution and agar preparation, and microscopy.
  • Familiarity with biology laboratory equipment and techniques.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Science (or related field) required.
  • Must be willing to take all the University of Calgary required training.
  • Must be willing to have valid First Aid certification.
  • Previous experience working at a post-secondary institution or large, complex organizations is an asset.
