As the Senior Manager of North American Payroll, you will play a vital role in Canfor's objective of becoming a premier employer in all operating regions. You will lead our North American approach to time capture and payroll execution, acting as a critical business partner across the company. Reporting to the Director of Payroll Services, People Analytics, and Systems, you will be responsible for managing payroll-related risk, ensuring accurate processes, meeting payroll requirements for multiple countries, executing reports and filings, and ensuring compliance with regulations. This role also involves leading the team through a transitional phase, drive through stabilization and maximizing the full potential of the payroll system.


The life of the Sr Manager North American Payroll includes:


  • Partner with the People Systems and Analytics team and global payroll service providers, validate and review ERP functionality and system updates to ensure payroll configurations, calculations, integrations, and reporting are working as expected.
  • Manage and drive resolution in any escalated operational delivery risks or issues
  • Responsible for various foundational payroll tasks including set up of new jurisdictions, and ensuring benefits and tax deductions are consistent with jurisdictional requirements and laws.
  • Partner closely with various stakeholders (finance, tax, total rewards, legal, IT and the business) to ensure payroll is processed securely as per defined procedures, guidelines, legal requirements and in compliance with local laws and regulations
  • Guide our sustained payroll transformation to standardize and streamline our current set-up. Z over the next three (3) years
  • Develop our overall North American payroll service strategy, supporting local/global activities to align with Canfor’s strategy.
  • Lead activities in service level management in partnership with our regions and vendors to improve efficiency and effectiveness
  • Lead and inspire the global payroll team to ensure the right people, at the right time, get paid the right amount
  • Manage the year-end process including but not limited to the pension adjustments, taxable benefits, W-2, T4/T4A slips, and filing with revenue agencies within deadlines.
  • Investigate and report on discrepancies in payroll processes Establish and implement a system and processes to address payroll related queries. Ensure proactive communication of GL or other payroll related issues with key stakeholders within finance and business. Create and maintain the GL mapping framework within the payroll system
  • Govern and assess current payroll related systems, processes, and workflows; identify, investigate, recommend, and execute new or enhanced processes, and procedures, to improve operational effectiveness
  • Oversee and manage multiple payrolls on a bi-weekly, monthly and quarterly basis and ensure compliance with federal, provincial, multi-state, and country-specific laws and regulations.
  • Lead the payroll process with other departments for the purpose of delivering efficient payroll services, payments, and filings in Canada, multiple states in the US.
  • Participate in all M&A transactions as they pertain to payroll from start to end including but not limited to employee onboarding, legislation compliance, and system integration.
  • Keep up to date on required regulatory/compliance requirements and ensure compliance across the function
  • Track and analyze trends, deliver monthly payroll reports, and manage team resources and vendor performance to achieve payroll service performance
  • Monitor the latest payroll and wage laws and regulations to maintain tax and benefits compliance around deductions, withholdings, garnishments, classifications, employee mobility tracking, etc. Ensure monthly, quarterly and annual filings and reports are reviewed, approved, and filed timely and accurately.


For this role, you come equipped with:


  • Experience managing a team
  • A Degree in a related field
  • Experience with SAP Payroll, either on premise or in-cloud
  • Canadian Payroll Manager Certification
