Job Summary


The responsibility of the Senior Director, National Transportation Centre of Excellence (COE) is to lead the National Transportation COE team in balancing their objectives of driving cost-to-serve efficiencies, while meeting regulatory compliance requirements and customer experience expectations. As a member of the National Transportation organization leadership team, he/she will contribute in defining national delivery network and carrier strategies and best-in-class processes in the areas of operational performance and regulatory compliance. He/she is responsible to lead the National Transportation COE in achieving its mandate of driving operational excellence and continuous performance improvement nationally through Projects, initiatives, process standardization, network transformation and implementation of best practices. This means to lead and execute strategic and technical projects Nationally to support our Transport Strategic priorities and our LRP. In collaboration with the Vice President, National Transportation, he/she leads the execution of the national transportation transformation roadmap. He/she is required to engage with and influence multiple key internal stakeholders such as Distribution Operations, Customer Service, Regulatory/Quality, Human Resources, Procurement, IT, Legal and Finance, both at a regional and national level.


Job Responsibilities


  • Fosters a cohesive team unit and manages talent pipeline to enable organizational capabilities.
  • Oversees maintenance and accuracy of information on routes, rates, cost, and services.
  • Interacts with senior management on matters specific to scope of responsibility.
  • Directly manages a team of senior managers and individual contributors and is accountable for the engagement level of all employees within span of control, including associates.
  • Acts as the national Subject Matter Expert and Head Quarter liaison with corporate support functions.
  • Audits carrier costs and performances, analyzes our network, identifies opportunities, and transforms those opportunities into projects.
  • Acts as the escalation point for National decisions that will impact unit operations and may result in delays that could jeopardize overall business activities, add to cost-to-serve and may impact the medium-term goals of the organization.
  • Manages regional transportation activities through first level of senior managers and specialist individual contributors.
  • Ensures regional and/or national transportation related initiatives are delivered as per plan within the region and delivers the identified benefits /savings.
  • Frequently interacts with direct reports, customers, carrier partners, managers and/or peer group managers.
  • Manages and leads all projects in Transportation.
  • Responsible for the COE budget, drives financial performance by ensuring financial targets are met and identifies opportunities to drive cost-to-serve efficiencies.
  • Accountable to meet customers delivery expectations with the Transportation team.
  • Ensures lowest transportation cost-to-serve by analyzing company and customer needs, researching transportation methods, best practices, and technologies to improve our network and reduce our cost to serve.
  • Communicates organizational and functional strategies and translates it into functional goals for regional and national team.
  • Leads the National Transportation COE in defining and executing its mandate to nationally standardize and deploy best-in-class operational processes and continuous performance improvement initiatives as well as monitoring national delivery network operational and financial performance.
  • Acts as the national business process owner for the Transportation Management System and other technologies related to Transportation.
  • Interprets laws, rules and regulations regarding transportation and ensures compliance to such regulations in the region and nationally.
  • Integrates the activities of multiple workgroups and disciplines to obtain results.
  • Works on complex to highly complex issues where analysis of situation requires a good understanding of organizational objectives.
  • Assists with the development of National Transportation department strategies, objectives and performance standards/metrics, and is accountable to implement and deploy in the region.
  • Develops an efficient Dashboard and KPI to drive results nationally.


Job Qualifications


  • Experience in DSD (direct to store delivery) and Network optimization experience in the pharmaceutical distribution industry or related regulated distribution industries and/or large-scale national distributor/last mile transportation operations is an asset.
  • Project management – demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex projects from inception to implementation, proven track records of successful project implementations involving change management and process improvements.
  • Post-graduate degree or certification designation (CITT) is desirable.
  • Financial acumen – demonstrated proficiency in planning, managing an operations budget: identifying root causes to explain variances and elaborating targeted actions to met financial plans. Demonstrated ability to build business cases to support recommendations for new solutions.
  • Availability to travel nationally and within the region (up to 30%) is required.
  • Technology & Systems – demonstrated ability to deploy and leverage technology solutions such as Transportation Management System (TMS) and fleet management systems, routing optimization software and carrier sourcing platforms, experience with Oracle OTM an asset.
  • Operational performance – proven track record of developing and deploying analytical models and KPIs related to total cost-to-serve and network performance.
  • Written and oral fluency in English. French would be an asset.
  • Leadership – demonstrated ability to lead teams in a complex organization and quickly establish credibility across the organization, to engage and influence others.
  • Communication – demonstrated ability to communicate with all levels of the organization clearly and concisely and across functions to persuade and lead others in situations of challenge.
  • People Management – demonstrated ability to mobilize, coach and drive accountability with a diverse team, including individual contributors, managers of people and associates. Experience in a unionized environment is an asset.
  • 10+ years of progressive responsibilities in the areas of transportation, logistics or distribution in a management role.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management (operations, logistics, supply chain) or Engineering (industrial) or related field is required.
