About Nine Ten Publications
Nine Ten (ninetenpublications.ca) is a small publishing house focused on Canadian art, craft and creativity. We publish the online magazine Digits & Threads (digitsandthreads.ca), and are establishing our books division with two books and several booklets released, and three books in various stages of production, as of the spring of 2023.
Digits & Threads is the independent, member-supported online magazine for Canadian fibre and textile arts, crafts and industry. Digits & Threads also hosts a community of paying members who gather monthly on Zoom, and who have access to forums on the website.
Nine Ten is a small, values-driven company run by co-founders Kim Werker and Kate Atherley, operating out of home offices in Vancouver and Toronto, respectively. We are guided by our commitment to accessibility, inclusivity, diversity, financial and environmental sustainability, and reconciliation with Indigenous People. We believe in fostering sustainable business practices; nurturing strong relationships with our members, readers and community; and practicing radical transparency.
Position Summary
As sales and marketing assistant, you will help with our magazine- and book-related social media and promotions; support any major marketing campaigns and product launches; help with ongoing relational marketing efforts and initiatives that keep people—not likes or follows—at the centre of the work we do. You will work on advertising sales for Digits & Threads, including outreach to potential advertisers, providing information, and managing the ad calendar. You will also provide some customer support by email, answering common questions and referring other questions as needed.
You will report to and work closely with Kim Werker, who serves as publisher and marketing director.
We are a fully remote operation and it is expected that you will work using your own computer and internet connection. Software, as needed, will be provided. There is a possibility for in-person meetings and occasional in-person work, as needed or desired and if geography allows.
Because our staff is very small, you will have the opportunity to see how our sales and marketing efforts relate to every aspect of producing our books and online magazine and bringing them to market, executing crowdfunding campaigns, selling memberships, and maintaining relationships with our readers, members, and the broader business community.
Schedule
Ten to twelve hours per week to start. Hours are flexible, and we welcome applicants who need to accommodate school schedules, caregiving responsibilities, or other employment or obligations. Work communication occurs only between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Pacific time, Monday to Friday, predominantly through Slack; independent work may be completed at any time. We believe that personal responsibilities are as important as work responsibilities. We are far more concerned about work getting done, and done well, and that it is satisfying, than we are about when the work happens.

- Manage customer support emails and direct queries to relevant parties when needed

- Knowledge of fibre and/or textile crafts and the craft community
- Experience using a social-media management platform or ability to quickly learn how to use one, such as MeetEdgar
- Interest in digital and/or print publishing an asset, but not required
