Position Title: Acting Manager, Residence Life
Status: FT Admin Temporary
Hours: 37.5hrs/week

What You Will Do
Reporting to the Director, SWEL (Student Wellness and Equitable Learning) Operations and Development, the Manager, Residence Life (MRL) is responsible for strategic development and direct implementation and management of all aspects the Residence Life program (North and Lakeshore Campuses) for a residence population of approximately 2000 students.
This includes the supervision of the Residence Life Leadership Team (Residence Life Coordinators and Lead Coordinator, Residence Life and Education), implementation of programs and services that directly impact the student experience, implementing and managing student conduct and crisis intervention, as well as oversight of hiring and training programs for
all Residence Life Staff (23 FTE).
This position is responsible for the oversight of a budget of approximately $850,000 annually.
The MRL is part of an interdependent and collaborative team (within SWEL and alongside the Residence Operations team) committed to integrating the student voice and connecting research and evaluation to our practice in order to continuously build on our understanding of students’ wants and needs as well as how living environments contribute to student
success and belonging. Working closely with the Student Wellness and Equitable Learning (SWEL) and broader Student Success and Engagement (SSE) teams, the MRL will integrate key components of larger strategic frameworks (i.e., institutional: Healthy Community Framework, College Strategic Plan; broadly: Okanagan Charter, Canadian Mental Health
Standard) into programs within the Residence Life portfolio to ensure a seamless, caring, and holistic student living and learning experience. Our curricular approach facilitates the design and delivery of experiences and services so that students achieve priority developmental and educational outcomes. The MRL also works closely with the Campus Services team
at Humber in residence operations.
The MRL will be available on an on-call basis to support timely responses to behavioural issues, complex mental health concerns, emergencies and crisis situations, incidences of sexual violence, and student death. The incumbent will be closely connected with the College’s Student Support and Intervention Team to ensure effective, non-clinical case management
related to students of concern within residence, assessing and mitigating risk for violence and enabling collaborative consultation across functional unit teams.

What You Bring To The Role
Education
Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration/Leadership, Student Development, or Student Affairs Administration preferred. Specialization in designing, implementing, and assessing curriculum in residential and co-curricular settings is a key component of the role. Inclusive Curricular Design certificate an asset.
Experience
  • Experience in advising students, provision of support and safety plans, case management, emergency response, conflict mediation, program development, and student conduct in residence communities.
  • Must be bondable and receive a negative criminal record check/vulnerable sector check (i.e., have not been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not yet been granted).
  • At least 3 years of supervisory-related experience in a residence life program or student service area.
  • Competencies will include strategic and critical thinking, people management, facilitation, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, crisis management and the ability to foster integrity.
  • Experience managing a complex set of competing priorities – case management, emergencies, and responding to the personal crises of individual residents is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ directly related experience: working in a residence setting at a post-secondary institution with students and in program and curriculum design.
  • Experience developing and delivering training programs.
Skills
  • An understanding of and willingness to engage in assessment and ongoing program evaluation as a central component of strategic planning and program development to ensure student engagement, satisfaction, and learning outcomes.
  • Apply conflict resolution skills, and the ability to problem solve and make difficult and informed decisions through a demonstrated ability to deal with disruptive students, belligerent supporters (e.g., parents, guardians), and stressful situations (e.g., emergency calls and response, discipline).
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative to solve problems on a daily basis.
  • Flexible and creative thinking, and ability to adapt approach based on scenario that could change in the moment.
  • Well-developed and strong interpersonal skills (effective communication, active listening skills, etc.).
  • Sound knowledge of administrative practices and procedures, preferably in an educational setting – including an understanding of student self-governance (i.e., Residents’ Council).
  • Ability to work well on diverse teams and lead a team of colleagues using project management principles.
