Job Summary
Reporting to, and under the direction of, the Sr. Director Operational Risk, the Senior Manager Operational Risk will have accountability for contributing to the foundational development of the Operational Risk program at HOOPP. Under the guidance of the Sr. Director, the incumbent will be accountable for specific deliverables related to the build-out of the Operational Risk Management program, and will support the design, development, and implementation of early/quick wins, enterprise-wide governance frameworks, as well as first-generation risk assessment and monitoring/reporting tools.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of a team of risk management professionals with an exciting mandate of building an operational risk capability from the ground up. The team is in a growth mode under the overall direction of the VP Enterprise & Operational Risk. As the operational risk program matures, accountabilities for the team and this role will likely morph over time, with performance objectives suitable to the role to be re-articulated accordingly.
In this supporting role and to deliver on the enterprise-wide mandate of the program and team, the Senior Manager will be expected to develop solid working relationships with cross-functional partners across HOOPP. As such, in addition to proven risk experience, the position requires professional maturity and strong communication skills.
What you will do:
  • Leverage existing risk management processes and capabilities across HOOPP and your industry knowledge to support the design, implementation and documentation of frameworks for Operational Risk Management, ensuring they are suitable to HOOPP’s needs.
  • Provide analytical and operational support to the design, build and maintenance of an operational risk event reporting process for HOOPP, and the undertaking of associated procedures, including ongoing monitoring of the program for continued relevance and effectiveness.
  • Leverage existing industry best-practices and your experience in risk management to aid in the design, implementation and documentation of HOOPP non-financial risk taxonomies, contributing to a common language for risk across the organization.
  • Working alongside business partners and in support of the Sr. Director Operational Risk, facilitate the development, implementation and documentation of HOOPP’s operational risk framework and its underlying processes.
  • Work in partnership with key HOOPP internal stakeholders to contribute operational risk-based expertise to the development, implementation and documentation of enterprise-wide frameworks related to, for instance, business continuity management, privacy risk management, fraud risk management and reputational risk management.
  • Support the Sr. Director Operational Risk in the implementation of operational risk tools throughout HOOPP and in the provision of advice and counsel to the design, implementation, maintenance and facilitation of businesses’ execution of various risk-based policies across HOOPP.
  • Contribute to risk research aimed at improving HOOPP's ability to pro-actively respond to changes in operational risk factors.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of the ORM Framework, ensuring its ongoing relevance for HOOPP.
  • Over time and in a staged manner, provide strong analytical, operational and change management support to the Sr. Director Operational Risk in the design, development, implementation and maintenance of a consistent suite of methods and tools (for example: quarterly operational risk reporting and associated standards) to identify, assess, monitor and report operational risks.
What you bring:
  • Professional maturity and proven ability to build strong relationships.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Minimum 10 years of work experience, with 5 years' work experience in risk management in the financial services industry (previous pension fund experience is an asset).
  • Detail and execution-oriented with continuous improvement mind-set.
  • Knowledge of designing and developing training programs is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated strong research, innovation and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven experience in standard documentation and writing risk guidelines.
  • A motivated self-starter with strong time management and organizational skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • University education with a degree in business, risk management, operations research, organizational design, or other relevant major.
  • Alignment with HOOPP's values of Professional, Accountable, Compassionate, Trustworthy and Collaborative.
