SummaryThe Toronto Alliance to End Homelessness (TAEH) is hiring a Housing Solutions Manager to work alongside the Executive Director and the TAEH team to increase our impact in making homelessness in Toronto rare, brief, and non-recurring.
The TAEH is a network of partners across the city, united in the vision of preventing and ending homelessness. The Alliance is the City of Toronto’s non-Indigenous Community Advisory Board, and co-chairs the Toronto Housing and Homelessness Service Planning Forum and the Sub-Committee on Coordinated Access to Housing and Supports. Our priorities include ensuring Toronto has enough deeply affordable housing and supports to prevent and end homelessness for everyone.
RoleThis is a one-year position, with strong possibility of extension, contributing to achieving our 4 strategic outcomes:
- TAEH is grounded in an Equity/Anti-Oppression Framework.
- Grow and sustain the Movement
- Prevent and end homelessness in Toronto.
- Hold key stakeholders accountable to preventing and ending homelessness.
Key objectives and strategiesThe Housing Solutions Manager will work with the Executive Director and the TAEH team on the following key objectives and strategies:
1 - Manage TAEH’s housing work
- Identify best practices and contribute to TAEH’s development of policy and program recommendations.
- Identify and analyse housing issues and write summaries, briefs, deputations, memos to SC etc. as needed.
- Participate the City of Toronto in intergovernmental collaboration related to supportive housing initiatives, bringing non-profit sector lens into discussions and support execution of outcomes.
- Support TAEH in delivering housing outcomes in TAEH Strategic Plan, including:
- Sector capacity building
- Supportive Housing Growth
- Developmental Services Housing initiatives
- Non-profit housing development
- Lead collaborative sector, and cross-sector, planning processes to support housing outcomes, including support services to ensure successful tenancies.
- Attend meetings and present on behalf of TAEH, including City Council Committee deputations.
- Support TAEH’s Housing Development Working Group and other housing related working groups that may arise.
- Deeply affordable housing options
- Coordinate with City of Toronto’s Housing Secretariat on shared goals and outcomes of the Housing TO Action Plan: 2020-2030 and other mutually identified objectives and initiatives.
2 - Contribute to TAEH communications regarding housing issues:
- Support quick responses when needed.
- Contribute to ad hoc campaigns as needed.
- Social media strategy and execution as needed.
- Contribute to TAEH newsletter as needed.
- Work with the Housing Secretariat to identify and share timely information and updates with TAEH networks.
3 - Contribute to Forum and events, including:
- Ad hoc events
- Symposia and Forums
- The Toronto Housing and Homelessness Service Planning Forum
- TAEH Community Partner meetings
CompetenciesTo succeed in this role, the Housing Solutions Manager will have:
- Coalition building skills.
- Public speaking/presentation and communication skills.
- Core expertise to enable TAEH to deliver on housing outcomes, including supportive, deeply affordable, developmental services and non-profit housing.
- Coordination and organization skills to support TAEH’s Housing Development Working Group, including facilitation, leading collective/group writing, editing and approval processes.
- An interest in, and engaged by, the TAEH environment, seeking out opportunities and best practices in non-profit housing development, in ending homelessness, and working with a diverse set of cross-sector stakeholders.
- The ability to keep up with and analyze housing and homelessness policy and programs from all orders of government.
- Strong drafting and writing skills to produce deputations, letters to Council and other orders of government, briefs, position statements and Board memos.
- Good political sense and skills.
QualificationsTAEH is looking for a person who:
- Is an informed, trusted, and savvy expert on housing programs, policies and government processes in Toronto, Ontario, and Canada.
- Has knowledge of, and respect for, the multiple causes of homelessness and barriers to finding and maintaining housing
- Has significant experience in social and/or community services public policy and advocacy in Toronto.Similar experience in Ontario and with the federal government, and in the areas of housing and homelessness, is preferred.
- Is committed to housing solutions to prevent and end homelessness.
An understanding of equity and inclusion
- A commitment to reconciliation.
- A commitment to working from anti-oppression, anti-racism, and equity principles. This includes addressing the overrepresentation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour among people who experience homelessness and approaching the work through trauma-informed, harm reduction approaches.
- Ensuring that the voices of individuals with lived experience are prioritized, including working iteratively with TAEH’s People With Lived Experience Caucus.
Problem-solving and organizational skills
- Comfort and ability to work independently, including ability to seek support and guidance when needed.
- A bias to action, while also being able to be flexible and responsive to change.
- Motivated by a job well-done.
- Strategic thinking and planning skills with a keen ability to anticipate issues, identify solutions, and problem-solve.
- A track record of integrity and accountability.
- Project management skills, including organization and documentation.
Collaboration and teamwork
- Demonstrated experience and comfort in working with people at all levels in organizations.
- Enthusiasm and skill for coalition building.
- Strong interpersonal skills:relationship and team building skills, negotiation, patience, empathy, and the ability to understand and appreciate different opinions, needs, and motivations of participants and stakeholders.
Education and/or lived experience
- A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience is required.
Mid to late July 2023 or similar availability of the successful candidate.
$87,500 – 90,000 per year dependent on experience and benefits.
