Position Overview

The Pembina Institute is seeking a highly motivated and passionate individual to join the Alberta team to lead and grow its flagship initiative, the Business Renewables Centre Canada (BRC-Canada). This person will thrive working with — and constantly learning from — our BRC members and external stakeholders in order to facilitate market-driven, large-scale renewable energy investment in Canada.

BRC-Canada (businessrenewables.ca) is a non-profit initiative of the Pembina Institute that works to simplify and accelerate large-scale corporate and institutional renewable energy procurement across the country. Currently, Alberta provides the regulatory environment to facilitate these types of transactions. Expanding corporate procurement to other jurisdictions is a key goal of the BRC over the next five years. We are confident in our ability to reach a goal of facilitating 10 GW of announced deals by 2030, and potentially more as other provinces take note of the private sector investment creating jobs.

Position Summary

We are looking for someone energetic and resourceful with relevant market, policy and technical experience, strong communication skills, a solid work ethic and the tenacity needed to lead the BRC-Canada into the future. The candidate should have an entrepreneurial spirit and excel at building stakeholder relationships. Candidates should have the capacity to build relationships across different levels of government, as these relations are critical to the success of the program goals across the country. The individual should have an understanding of how corporations' function in the sustainability field and/or undertaken renewable energy procurement.

This position offers the opportunity to establish working relationships with energy professionals and leaders across Canada and contribute directly to addressing global climate change by scaling up the deployment of renewable energy.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Increase BRC membership, being sensitive to balance among membership sub-groups
• Develop strategies to diversify and increase funding opportunities for the BRC
• Manage the BRC’s budget and resourcing needs
• Cultivate, maintain and deepen constructive relationships with members, government, industry leaders, industry associations, thought leaders and media
• Develop and implement BRC strategy and mission to build community, increase awareness and provide effective tools and services at meetings, presentations, conferences and with media
• Manage the BRC advisory board including the quarterly meetings
• Lead a team of analysts and communications staff, and manage contractors when required
• As a member of a leading think tank, contribute by leading or supporting initiatives such as exploring the role for Carbon Dioxide Removal in Canada’s net-zero strategy
• Collaborate with relevant Pembina Institute program leads to achieve the common vision and goals, and with the Clean Energy Buyers Alliance team, which undertakes similar work in the U.S. market

Essential Skills And Qualifications

Candidates must clearly reflect (with examples) the following skills and experience in their application:

• A minimum of 10 years of work experience in industry, non-governmental or government sectors working on energy and environmental issues, with at least two years in the electricity sector
• Strategic thinker who can identify various approaches to achieve both short- and long-term strategy objectives
• Minimum of an undergraduate degree in business, economics, public policy, law, engineering, sciences or related field
• Well-developed and tested business acumen
• Excellent project and people management skills
• A natural advocate and persuasive communicator who is able to build deep and lasting relationships with members and potential members of the BRC
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to develop collaborative relationships with a wide array of stakeholders, distilling complex ideas into plain language
• Knowledge of the renewable energy sector in Canada, and challenges and opportunities for market-driven renewable energy, both provincially and federally

Other Valuable Qualifications

• Experience with corporate sustainability and/or corporate procurement of renewable energy projects
• Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and social change through educational, professional, and volunteer experiences
• Direct experience in developing or implementing provincial and/or federal environmental policy and regulation
• Media spokesperson experience as well as experience in facilitation and/or in chairing meetings and group processes
• Experience with energy and/or environmental policy advocacy and regulatory reform for environmental protection in the energy sector
• Clear and concise writer who can adapt to a variety of styles, from technical and academic reports to more informal blogs and social media posts

Compensation And Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience. The hiring salary range for the position is $90,000 to $107.500 annually. The Pembina Institute operates on a 37.5-hour work week, provides flex hours and a hybrid work environment as well as a comprehensive benefits plan, four weeks of vacation and an RRSP matching plan from day one.
