About The Role


Are you an inspired and committed renewables development leader? We are currently looking for a Director of Renwables Development Canada to join our TransAlta team. Reporting to the Vice President of Canadian Development, this role is an integral player on the Canadian Growth team. As the Director, you are accountable for delivering on deals, projects, and commercial opportunities that meet the growth objectives that TransAlta has recently communicated to the market. You will manage and execute all aspects of development for complex large-scale renewable projects from inception to construction hand-off in line with the Canadian growth strategy with a strong focus on "best in class' commercial execution delivery while working closely with internal and external stakeholders. You will also implement a growth program that ensures TransAlta is uniquely and competitively positioned to win greenfield growth opportunities.


You are responsible for developing a d eep understanding of the energy markets in Canada in order to support greenfield prospecting; strategic relationships with key parties (e.g., construction contractors, equipment suppliers, transmission operators) necessary to win growth opportunities; and effective relationships with existing and potential key industrial and large utility customers to support a customer driven growth program.

What You Will


  • Provide inputs to, and conduct critical review of, project pro forma models
  • Collaborate with customers to deliver customer solutions
  • Manage and execute all aspects of development or redevelopment for complex large-scale renewable projects from inception to construction hand-off in line with the Canadian growth strategy, including leading or overseeing activities such as community outreach, land acquisition, permitting, interconnection, and securing offtake for renewable projects, while supporting procurement, technical, commercial, and valuation workstreams
  • Provide leadership for optimal performance by selecting, developing, and managing direct reports capable of producing agreed deliverables
  • Drive methodologies that minimize risks and maximize the chances of success as they relate to the projects under development
  • Maintain industry relationships and current knowledge of market drivers and industry trends to facilitate early-mover positioning as opportunities materialize
  • Work closely with the senior leadership team to actively identify and mitigate business and capital risks associated with investment decisions and asset operations
  • Identify creative or alternative project development approaches that reduce exposure to project development risks, optimize development schedules or create additional project value
  • Project types will typically include, but not be limited to, greenfield development, brownfield or acquisitions where due diligence and integration planning will be required
  • Manage environmental, legal, and technical subject matter experts, contractors, and consultants to maintain project timeline and budget
  • Negotiate critical project contracts and agreements including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)
  • Establish and maintain strong and effective working relationships with other senior leaders, technical counterparts, and other departments in the organization such as legal, operations, and accounting/financial planning, as well as outside financial and technical advisers to evaluate new business opportunities for the company
  • Create and manage a healthy development pipeline of projects within the Canadian growth program
  • Identify and mitigate enterprise risk
  • Attend customer, corporate, and stakeholder events
  • Navigate internal project stage-gate reviews and investment decisions


What We Need From You


  • Knowledge of commodity markets and market fundamentals in TransAlta’s regions of focus
  • A degree in Engineering, Business, Economics, or a Commerce related field and additional experience or further education (i.e. MBA, PMP) would be preferable
  • Passion for the renewable energy industry
  • Understanding of technology options, limitations, and capabilities pertaining to energy generation
  • Excellent negotiation skills and proven track record and ability to aggressively negotiate and structure commercial deals, contracts, transactions, or partnerships with counterparties while maintaining or strengthening business relationships with stakeholders
  • Valid driver's license
  • Strong financial acumen with knowledge of power generation or energy sector economic drivers
  • Technical engineering, procurement, and/or construction experience and knowledge of power generation and/or other infrastructure projects would be highly desirable
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written; this will include the ability to communicate effectively both “top” and “down” in the organization
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in business, project management, and project development in power generation, previous experience in power generation or renewable energy sectors is strongly preferred
  • Background in financial analysis and understanding of financial concepts such as accounting, financial modeling, deal structuring, and other investment activities
  • Ability to travel within Canada (and the US as required)
  • Track record of reliably meeting deadlines and commitments
  • Proven ability to be a team player in a corporate setting but also an individual that is action-oriented, drives for results, and works with a sense of urgency.
  • Motivated and self-starter with the ability to proactively source and complete deals for TransAlta
  • Experience identifying, evaluating, executing, and negotiating large-scale investment opportunities, greenfield projects, joint venture partnerships, and/or other commercial arrangements with partners or customers is required for the role
