MEOW Foundation is looking for an experienced Volunteer Coordinator to join the leadership team.
We seek an individual who is passionate about animal welfare, has excellent communication skills, is highly organized, accepts positive and constructive coaching and feedback, and is comfortable problem-solving sensitive personnel matters.
This individual must be inspired by leading a team of like-minded volunteers (280+) to help MEOW fulfill its mission to Make Each One Wanted (MEOW).
Reporting to the Director, Programs, the successful candidate will ensure that the appropriate volunteer opportunities, programs, and protocols are in place to deliver optimal care and service at the MEOW Adoption Centre, Charity Thrift Shop, and Regal Cat Café.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintain and update the volunteer database (Better Impact).
- Match volunteers to opportunities that suit their skills.
- Counsel, mentor, coach and supervise volunteers, and help ensure all required policies and procedures are followed at each location and for each position.
- Terminate volunteers, if needed.
- Recruit, screen, interview and train new volunteers for the Adoption Centre, our foster home network, the MEOW Charity Thrift Shop, and the Regal Cat Café.
- Monitor, respond, and maintain the Volunteer email box, phone lines, and voice mail box (daily, through both written correspondence and telephone discussions).
- Ensure volunteers and staff are continuously informed and updated about MEOW news and promote volunteer opportunities to the public.This includes contributing content to the monthly volunteer newsletter and working with other departments as required.
This is a leadership position. The Volunteer Coordinator will model and lead with a collaborative style and ensure the volunteer requirements for three distinct Operations are fulfilled to a high standard.
Qualifications include:
- Flexible approach to differing work styles amongst team members and volunteers.
- Post-secondary education in non-profit or volunteer management (or similar).
- Exceptionally organized.
- Diplomatic, patient, and confident to help resolve issues and communicate kindly and effectively with others.
- Superior communication and volunteer relations skills. The successful candidate will value the contributions of all staff and volunteers and facilitate inter-team communication and collaboration.
- Experience with the volunteer software management system Better Impact (or similar).
- Highly developed cooperation and collaboration skills to manage the complex needs of multiple volunteer roles and opportunities.
- Ability to actively and rapidly problem solve.
- Demonstrated success in people leadership and experience in the non-profit sector (or similar).
- Familiar with provincial Occupational Health and Safety Standards as applied to shelters, and cognizant of employment standards and related legislation.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a volunteer management role (or similar).
Job requirements and working conditions:
- This role is primarily located at the Adoption Centre and is a desk job and the candidate must be comfortable working in a shelter environment and with animal body fluids, dirt and dust, animal fur, dander and animal waste, zoonotic disease, cleaning chemicals, wet floors. In addition, the individual will travel and work from the Charity Thrift Shop and Regal Cat Café.
- Valid Alberta driver’s license and use of own vehicle, with adequate insurance.
- Police Information Check including the vulnerable sector is required.
Workdays and hours are flexible, however must be standardized.
Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends if needed to accommodate special events and urgent needs.

MEOW Foundation is a Calgary based no-kill registered charity and humane society that rescues abandoned cats, provides shelter, food, and medical care, and matches them to loving adopters and foster homes.
MEOW provides subsidized Spay/Neuter services to Calgarian’s in need and a Trap Neuter Return (TNR) program for feral cats. We advocate for responsible, compassionate animal care through education and community outreach.
Our combined programs assist over 3000 cats each year. MEOW is a well-respected member of the animal rescue community in Calgary and works closely with Alberta based groups to provide a future for mistreated or abandoned companion animals.
