Opportunity


MacEwan University is seeking a Deaf Services Coordinator for a 0.3 FTE part-time continuing opportunity with our Access and Disability Resources department. Reporting to the Manager, Student Wellness Services, you will collaborate with the MacEwan University community to facilitate full access for students with disabilities. In this role, you will coordinate communication support needs of deaf and hard of hearing students, manage and administer interpreter services, and provide overall support services that facilitate full participation in the post-secondary experience.


Key Responsibilities Include


  • Evaluating deaf services programming and student communication support needs;
  • Reporting regularly on actual service hours, fee for service expenditures and revenues;
  • Providing ongoing advice and support to students regarding academic progress and referring to other University services as needed;
  • Collaborating with faculty and staff members to facilitate effective communication support for deaf and hard of hearing students and provide academic planning assistance including development of individual service plans;
  • Securing funding for assistive services and technology;
  • Reviewing and developing policies and procedures that improve service delivery; and
  • Promoting awareness, inclusion and understanding about the communication needs of individuals with hearing loss in the academic environment.
  • Providing projections of student enrollment and demands for communication support services;
  • Managing and tracking bookings and payment for interpreters and CART reporters;
  • Providing, coordinating, and supervising interpreting services, Communication Access Realtime Technology (CART) reporting services, and other communication support services for deaf and hard of hearing students;

The Successful Candidate Will Have


  • Versatility in interpreting across disciplines;
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; and
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Highly developed understanding of deaf culture, deafness and hearing loss and their implications in a post-secondary setting;
  • Excellent interpreting skills;
Qualifications


  • Post-secondary interpreting experience.
  • Graduate of an interpreter education program recognized by the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters.
  • Administrative experience.
  • Equivalences may be considered.
