Student Support and Placement Officer


The Student Support and Placement Officer role is an integral component of the Career Pathways team. The incumbent acts as a liaison and primary College contact for placement supervisors and students in the Career Pathways program. The incumbent will recruit placements in the community that are suitable for the needs of the student and the program. The incumbent ensures an appropriate match and provides liaison between the student and the placement.Throughout the placement term, the incumbent will monitor the students in their placements, including monitoring the students’ workplace performance through check-ins with supervisor, student, tracking hour completion, and relevant student’s assigned tasks.They will also provide basic employment supports to students through the review of various professional and employment skills, and will connect appropriate students to community-based employment supports as needed.The incumbent also provides academic student support in the classroom and the Career Pathways lab. In this role the incumbent will provide clarification of assignments and in-class materials, support a variety of learning strategies, accompany students to the Square, ALS, the OneCard office and invigilate tests and exams. The incumbent also advocates, intervenes and acts on behalf of the Career Pathways student with faculty, other College students, and College-wide services. The incumbent will attend staff meetings and communicate issues as they occur.


Responsibilities


Position duties include, but are not limited to:


Recruit Appropriate Placement Sites That Meet Individual Career Pathways Student Placement Plans By Marketing And Networking In The Community As Follows


  • Following up with sites before, during and after student placement to receive feedback and input for change/improvement
  • Confirming placements that are available and appropriate for program/student needs
  • Identifying and communicating with potential placement agencies/employers to educate them about the Career Pathways program goals and philosophy, and to recruit appropriate sites for Career Pathways student placements in a variety of focus areas
  • Researching agencies, businesses and services within the geographic catchment area of the college to gain an understanding of potential placement opportunities
  • Communicating potential placement sites to students to identify possible concerns and appropriateness
  • Using placement plan information created in previous and community placement directories to identify potential placements


Support students academically in Career Pathways lab and classrooms by:


  • Fostering student independence through encouraging self-advocacy and student initiative
  • Invigilating tests and exams (including verbal testing, alternate area from class, group testing in the lab or classroom)
  • Supporting a variety of learning strategies (including note-taking the use of adaptive technologies, computer program/software), and setting up and assisting with the use of adaptive equipment when needed (in and out of class)
  • Communicating all student incidents to Career Pathways team, by email on the date of the occurrence
  • Escorting students to IT or the OneCard office to support student’s technical needs
  • Providing clarification of assignments and in-class materials
  • Providing technical assistance for students as they navigate the LMS
  • Escorting students to the Square to support student access of Square services (Financial Aid, Counselling, ALS Accommodations)


Support Students In Placement Experiences By


  • Updating necessary recording tools (timesheets, confidentiality statements evaluation forms), as well as Career Pathways program information manuals and evaluation packages
  • Identifying and developing appropriate workplace strategies for the Career Pathways student and the supervisor to encourage Career Pathways student success in the placement experience
  • Ensuring all placement requirements for Career Pathways students (e.g. health forms, police record searches, WSIB forms etc.) are completed and on file
  • Supervise students while on placement, which includes addressing and problem-solving any issues that arise for student and/or placement supervisor, tracking student placement hours, and on-going communication with students and placement supervisors
  • Preparing Career Pathways students for interviews and placements
  • Develop/facilitate workshops that will support work placements
  • Ensuring that Career Pathways students have knowledge of and can arrive at placement in a timely manner
  • Facilitating interviews between Career Pathways students and placement supervisors
  • Create placement tasks for students
  • Maintaining accurate files of placement sites: issues and concerns, contacts, visit documentation, student assignments
  • Communicating with Coordinator to identify and develop learning plans/activities to assist the student to be successful in the placement
  • Monitor students’ performance in placement through collecting and reviewing data from placement evaluations and monitoring student placement assignments
  • Regular visits to class with impending and current cohorts on placement to address work placement concerns/performance instructions


Develops appropriate placement plans for individual Career Pathways students by:


  • Identifying appropriate accommodations for workplace access and success
  • Interviewing Career Pathways students individually to gain understanding of areas of interest and to nurture collaboration in placement plan
  • Gathering input for placement plan from Career Pathways program team


Provide Employment Support To Students By


  • Meeting with appropriate students (students who choose to pursue employment or volunteering after program completion) to support them to create a transition plan, including connecting them with appropriate community employment/volunteer supports
  • Engage with and create partnerships with various community-based employment agencies
  • Meeting with appropriate students (students who choose to pursue employment or volunteering after program completion) to review professional skills


AssistingtheCareerPathways Programwithadministrative Duties


  • Preparing and uploading statistics at the end of each month for all student contacts
  • Support Career Pathways program with maintaining student records, Career Pathways Team eLearn page, etc.
  • Prepare and present updates and reports on placements for Program Advisory Committee meetings and other internal functions
  • Sitting on any boards that may contribute to Mohawk College or the broader community gaining a better understanding of Career Pathways program or to developing more opportunities for possible work placements
  • Support Coordinator/Program mail outs, class email distribution for purposes of marketing, intake, and transition
  • Tracking/filing and recording program documents and other pertinent program information for future reference by staff
  • Completing, in collaboration with Associate Dean, Coordinator, Faculty, any required documentation and forms for students and School of Liberal Studies


Other duties as assigned


Qualifications


The successful candidate will have:


  • Experience working with at-risk individuals
  • 2-year diploma or equivalent in Educational Support Diploma, Social Service Worker, Child and Youth Worker, Special Education experience/training, Business, Marketing, and/or any Diploma with significant related experience in the field of Human Services.
  • Proficient in the use of computers (Word, Excel, Google Docs, Email)
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in vocational skills training/job coaching and/or job placement
  • Proven ability to work with and provide employment services for individuals with significant learning disabilities, cognitive challenges, addiction issues, physical disabilities or mental health challenges
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively and respectfully with diverse groups of students, employees, and community members
  • Experience using Adaptive technologies that can aid employment and academic independence
