POSITION: Production Manager


REPORTS TO: Senior Manager Operations


DEPARTMENT: Rail Mechanical, Diesel Shop and Wheelhouse


LOCATION: North Bay


REFERENCE: 300-86-24


SALARY: $85,826 – $100,950

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:


This position manages the work, practices and procedures of the Diesel Shop and Wheelhouse. The manager will be responsible for establishing priorities, work standards, develop plans as well as performance management of staff.


MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Provide coverage and support in the absence of the Senior Manager of Operations, including oversight of all employees on the shop floor.
  • Create operational and capital budget submissions.
  • Manage internal and external locomotive overhauls including overseeing work processes.
  • After hours work, off-site work and/or travel to attend calls, derailments and other duties as required from time-to-time.
  • Monitor production schedules to ensure work is completed in accordance with customer contract obligations.
  • Assist with the preparation of tender submittals and the implementation of new contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety regulations within the workplace.
  • Develop methods and techniques for productivity improvements and ensure work conforms to specifications.
  • Work with Senior Management to ensure successful operations of department.
  • Works collaboratively with Human Resources on employee and labour relations matter including investigations, discipline, attendance, conduct and performance management.
  • Forecast and plan for required equipment for shop, including sourcing with vendors.
  • Mentor and support the learning and development of shop employees, production support staff, and supervisory team.
  • Oversee work processes to ensure budgets are adhered to and take action to correct/adjust as necessary.
  • Manage direct supervisors and their direct reports.
  • Review reports to ensure all labour is properly allocated to appropriate program(s), ensuring any discrepancies are corrected promptly.
  • Support supervisors with training requirements and instruction for unionized staff


REQUIREMENTS:


  • Solid understanding of safety codes and a demonstrated ability to work in a safety conscious manner.
  • Experience in labour and employee relations and administration of collective agreements.
  • Minimum 5 years of recent management experience in a locomotive environment
  • Knowledge of railway mechanical equipment would be considered an asset
  • College diploma in Business Administration or equivalent experience
  • Red Seal License in Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Truck and Coach Technician, or Automotive Technician
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Committed to company health and safety
  • Proficient use of computer systems including MS office including MS project
  • Leadership training and a minimum of 5 years managing and/or supervising a team of workers in a unionized environment.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience with implementing procedure/organizational change
  • Experience with managing a departmental budget.
