Description
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick (CPSNB) is a medical regulatory authority that, by authority of the Medical Act, 1981, serves and protects the public by regulating the practice of medicine in the province. With over 10 employees and over 2000 licensed physicians, the CPSNB is currently seeking a lawyer to support and further the CPSNB's mandate.
Reporting to the Associate Registrar, the incumbent will work Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm. Flexibility in hours may be required at specific times and may include evenings and weekends.
Key Responsibilities
As the Lawyer, you will support the operational administration of the Professional Conduct Department and the College generally to best ensure success and to meet the requirements of the CPSNB.
Below Is An Outline Of Key Responsibilities

• Assist in preparing files for hearings in collaboration with external legal counsel
• Research in various areas of law
• Prepare legal opinions
• Other duties as required
• Identify, obtain, and analyze relevant information and documents, including hospital and office records, reports, statements, and transcripts
• Physically able to perform assigned duties
• Maintain communication with relevant parties and legal counsel throughout the investigative process
• Conduct interviews of patients and witnesses
• Facilitate settlements of complaint matters
• Draft summaries of the evidence, including medical records
• Prepare Orders, recommendations, and other legal documents
• Explain the complaints process and policies to parties

Required Education And Experience

• Law degree
• Admitted to the Law Society of New Brunswick
• 1-5 years of relevant work experience

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Team player who can also work independently and take initiative
• Understanding of the regulatory environment would be an asset
• Strong research skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to navigate emotionally-charged situations
• Interviewing skills would be an asset
• Bilingualism in French and English, both written and oral, would be an asset
• Ability to read and interpret medical records
• Strategic approach to problem solving
• Understanding of the principles of corporate law and administrative law would be an asset
• Proficient with Microsoft Office products
