About The Role

The Coating Designer is primarily responsible for designing and validating the manufacturability of optical thin films deposited onto the optical elements in WESCAM MX-series product line. Additionally, he/she will work closely with the Front Line Operations Engineering staff to investigate day-to-day issues that arise in the Coating production cell, lending expertise in optical thin-film manufacturing and characterization.

Primary Responsibilities

• Develop and update manufacturing procedures and instructions throughout the NPI lifecycle, using our Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Configuration Management system.
• Participate in and prepare content for New Product Introduction (NPI) stage gate reviews, providing feedback to designers to improve manufacturability of coatings, and estimating labour hours and tooling/support equipment requirements.
• Manage all activities for the commissioning of new equipment, characterizing performance and validating for use in production.
• Design and develop optical thin-films, understanding the capabilities of in-house vacuum coating chambers, to meet drawing specifications provided by the Electro-Optical / Opto-Mechanical Design team.
• Develop and execute the technology and capital roadmap for the Coating production cell, addressing equipment obsolescence and capability gaps.
• Participate in the creation and maintenance of other NPI documentation (PFMEA, SPC, First Pass Approval (FPA), control plans, etc.).

Secondary Responsibilities

• Support other business needs related to the Coating production cell required by Operations and Operations Engineering leadership.
• Review change requests generated by engineering and production staff, and implement changes as required.
• Act as a back-up point of contact to the member(s) of Operations Engineering responsible for front line support of the Coating production cell in terms of root cause analysis and corrective actions for systemic coating failures.
• AS9100 and Mil-Std knowledge and experience an asset, but not required.
• Able to collaborate and communicate with multi-disciplinary teams across the organization.
• Liaise with external vendors (OEMs and service providers) regarding equipment upgrades, metrology services, materials characterization and consulting for process developments/improvements.

Desired Education and Experiences

• Knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles an asset, but not required
• University degree in Physics or related field (e.g., Materials Science).
• Knowledge of AS9100 and MIL standards an asset, but not required.
• Minimum of 3 years of work experience in thin film coating design and manufacturing.
