Associate Electrical Engineer – Protection Applications

• Develop design basis documentation for protective settings and generate native relay configuration files.
• Provide technical guidance to the project team, conduct design reviews, and support quality control.
• Coordinate departmental or divisional project studies, reports, or project design assignments.
• Support system testing during Factory Accept Test (FAT) and Site Integration Test (SAT) and troubleshooting.
• Assess feasibility or soundness of proposed applications when data is insufficient, or testing is advisable.
• Act as primary contact for both internal and external client-side communication.
• Develop and evaluate plans for major projects.
• Manage the complete life cycle of protection and control engineering tasks including review of customer engineering documents, preparation of scoping document, implementation of relay logic with engineering tools, configuration of IEC 61850 for peer-to-peer communication, development of relay system description and testing procedures.
• Lead proposal work.
• Execute complex assignments requiring the use of advanced electrical engineering techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment, and/or technological methods.
• Train, guide, and mentor lower-level engineers.

Qualifications

• Familiarity with commonly utilized communication protocols like DNP (Distributed Network Protocol), MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification), Modbus, etc.
• Leading multiple engineering teams on engineering design and scope for multiple projects.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Power systems modeling and protective relay coordination analysis using ASPEN, CAPE, or similar fault analysis software.
• Designing calculations, including short circuit calculation, current transformer performance and ratio selection, over-current element coordination, zone-distance element selection and coordination, and relay loadability calculation.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
• Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
• Knowledge of IEC 61850 GOOSE (Generic Object-Oriented Substation Event), MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification), SV (Sample Value) and its implementation.
• Developing native relay setting files using SEL’s AcSELerator or GE’s Enervista or ABB PCM or similar manufacturer-specific software programs.
• Conducting analyses to develop design options, performing modeling and calculations for protective relay systems.
• Knowledge of the main protection schemes and philosophies encountered in Transmission, Distribution and Renewable Collector Substations.
• Professional Engineer licensure is required (P.E. or P.Eng.).
• NERC-PRC standards and other commonly utilized industry standards.
• Application of industry standards for the protection of system equipment, including power busses, power transformers, HV/MV circuit breakers, capacitor banks, reactors, transmission lines, and distribution feeders.
• Providing engineering support with construction and commissioning activities for substations.
• Requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field plus twelve (12) years of experience in electrical systems studies in the electric utility or industrial power distribution industry.
• Protection and Control system design for substation applications and automation (69kV – 500kV), one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, control panel layouts, bill of materials, and protection specifications
