Esplanade HealthTech Ventures is a leading early-stage digital health venture capital fund. Based in Canada, we invest globally in Seed through Series B patient-centric digital health companies. Initially formed in 2019 by the founders of Medisys Health Group, Canada’s largest corporate health provider, and Persistence Capital Partners, Canada’s largest Healthcare Private Equity firm.
Over the past four years, Esplanade has invested in 16 companies ranging from AI enabled digital therapeutics to technology-enabled services.
What we are looking for:
The Analyst/Associate will work with the investment team to evaluate digital health companies for investment. You will actively manage the deal database and participate in drafting the investment memo outlining the business case and the financial models. You will assist in the due diligence activities and potentially form new companies. You will work directly with Esplanade partners on all aspects of a deal including strategy and thesis, deal sourcing and diligence as well as value creation post investment.
You will work directly on key fund activities including deal sourcing, pipeline, diligence and portfolio company support. You will have the opportunity to develop lasting personal and professional relationships with senior professionals that will establish a foundation for a successful career. We are looking for a self-motivated individual with a demonstrated interest in the startup ecosystem and a unique perspective on what makes a good investment. You might have spent a several years in venture capital or at a startup, investment banking, consulting, or investment firm, and have a passion for healthcare.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct due diligence on new investments based on qualitative and quantitative factors (including researching competitive landscapes, building financial models, and running diligence calls) to write investment memos
- Represent our fund in industry conferences and networking events
- Maintain and optimize fund deal flow database
- Assess investment pitches and quickly decipher attractiveness of opportunities
- Develop and leverage an existing network of relationships
- Participate in educational seminars and workshops on due diligence, venture capital, and industry specific topics
- Analyze corporate and financial information
- Partner with portfolio companies to drive value creation, improve operations and performance
- Work with interns providing coaching and mentoring
- Perform in-depth market and sector research to develop new investment themes
Required Experience:
- Highly organized, shown to meet tight deadlines along with consistent accuracy and attention to detail
- The ability to work in an unstructured and fast pace environment
- Demonstrated ability in all financial aspects of transaction related work
- Good understanding of financial statements and modeling including extrapolation from large sets of incomplete quantitative and qualitative data
- A passion for early-stage venture capital, start-ups, and entrepreneurship with a good understanding of emerging technologies
- Bachelor’s degree in business, life sciences, computer science or engineering. MBA and other post-graduate degrees are a plus
- Intermediate Excel spreadsheet experience (formulas, dashboards, charts, pivots and analysis) and PowerPoint (data summary, executive presentations)
- Knowledge in finance/investments and tech space, an interest in healthcare would be a plus
- Advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to think strategically, analytically and creatively
- 2-5+ years experience in venture capital, private equity, startup/tech company, corporate development, investment banking, consulting or some combination of the above
