Job Description
Who We Are
At Northland, we’re enablers of change, united by our journey to transform the energy sector into the foundation for a sustainable future.
Since our inception, we’ve been early movers in the energy industry, adopting new initiatives that pave the way for communities across the globe and helping forge their path towards a carbon-neutral landscape.
We’re a different kind of independent power producer. As developers, owners and operators who are at the forefront of the energy transition, we’re uniquely positioned to leave a lasting impact in the regions where we operate. We’ve expanded our business across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia to become a global leader, all by bringing together industry experts to find solutions with an entrepreneurial mindset.
While our work powers communities across the globe, Northland is powered by our people.
What You’ll Do
As an Analyst or Associate within our Financial Partnerships & Corporate Transactions team, you will play a key part in Northland’s growth by driving outcomes that optimize the corporate value of our assets. You will have primary responsibility for assisting in executing and closing asset level financial partnerships, while also supporting the broader finance team with long-term strategic partnership planning, maintaining relationships with financial asset level partners, and continuously aligning strategy with our growth teams. Reporting to the Director, Financial Partnerships & Corporate Transactions, you will work closely with all members of the Capital Markets and Business Unit teams, as well as the broader Northland organization.
The position may require international travel to meet with Northland’s regional teams, potential partners, and other external parties.
Seniority for this role will be determined based on qualifications and relevant experience.
Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the evaluation and execution of M&A opportunities and strategic initiatives, including investments, full and partial divestitures, and strategic projects and partnerships.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the characteristics of Northland’s investment portfolio and regional growth strategies, our corporate strategy, industry trends, and competitive landscape to identify and make recommendations vis-à-vis potential partnership opportunities.
  • Support other initiatives as needed.
  • Regularly monitor the status of existing strategic partnerships using agreed upon metrics, periodically survey the entire portfolio to report learnings from the relative health and impact of each partnership.
  • Prepare and present findings, proposals, and ongoing updates to Northland’s Investment Committee and the executive management team.
  • Create, implement, and maintain tools, checklists, frameworks and financial models to support evaluation and execution of transactions.
  • Actively research the M&A deals prevalent in each market Northland operates and maintain a database of the deal metrics.
  • Collaborate with the Business Unit teams and develop relationships with existing and potential partners.
  • Support asset level sell-down transactions alongside the Director, business unit leads, and external advisors by developing and maintaining a financial model, coordinating due diligence activities and internal approvals processes, and preparing presentation materials.
Who You Are
  • Collaborative: You are a natural relationship builder and are comfortable working with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • A strong communicator: You have exceptional oral and written communication skills and can articulate your analyses in a clear and concise manner.
  • A proactive self-starter: You have a desire to succeed in a fast-paced, changing environment. You have a proven ability to take initiative, organize, and manage a high volume of detailed projects simultaneously, and prioritize appropriately to meet deadlines.
  • Eager to learn: You are humble about what you know, and you are curious and energetic about expanding your experiences.
  • Analytical: You can formulate valuable insights around the dynamic capital markets and can create structured analyses. Prior experience running financial models would be beneficial.
  • Diligent: You have solid attention to detail, and you follow up with others where needed to ensure outstanding information or actions are complete. You are hands-on and will roll up your sleeves to complete deliverables within required deadlines.
Qualifications And Experience
  • Understanding of economic, accounting, and basic tax concepts as well as power industry, capital markets, and applied investment and valuation methodologies.
  • Experience creating and maintaining financial models, preferably with a background in power and renewables, or infrastructure.
  • CFA, CPA, Graduate Degree (e.g. MBA, Masters in Finance) would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with dynamic business environments and working with different backgrounds and cultures. Proficiency is an international language other than English would be an asset.
